Field Hockey Drops Heartbreaker in CCC Semifinals

WENHAM, Mass.—Endicott College Field Hockey scored two goals in the final 10 minutes and change to slide past host Gordon, 2-1, in the Commonwealth Coast Conference semifinals. The Fighting Scots scored the only tally in the first half and their defense held strong despite a barrage of chances by the Gulls. Endicott used a penalty stroke and a penalty corner to overcome the early deficit, and they move on to the CCC championship at the University of New England on Saturday afternoon.

Gordon and Endicott found themselves in a similar situation entering the matchup on Wednesday afternoon. The Fighting Scots had completed back-to-back regular season sweeps of the Gulls and Gordon knocked Endicott out of the conference semifinals on their way to the CCC crown in 2013. The Gulls looked to break a stretch of five consecutive losses against a team they had previously handled in the win-loss column.

The Gulls flexed their offensive prowess in the first 20 minutes of the game, earning penalty corner after penalty corner. With two All-CCC defensive performers, Gordon was able to withstand the early attack by the Gulls and killed five penalty corners in the first 10 minutes of game time.

The Fighting Scots (12-9) didn't register their first offensive opportunity until the 22nd minute and Gordon made the Gulls pay. A cleared ball found its way down to Gordon's scoring circle, allowing the Scots top forwards to run onto the play. Emily Allcroft (Haydenville, Mass.) received an entrance pass from the right side of the field and fired a ball directly at the pads of All-CCC goalkeeper Cheka Ventura (Lawrence, Mass.). The deflection took a Gordon bounce straight to the stick of Brittany Hawkins (Hampstead, N.H.) on the right side. As she was tripping, Hawkins skipped a shot between a defender's legs and into the wood in the center of the goal.

Endicott (16-4) outshot Gordon 6-3 in the first half and earned seven penalty corners with the Scots only getting one. Despite the advantage for the Gulls, Gordon led at the break 1-0.

Gordon's bend-but-don't-break defense held strong in the beginning of the second half as Endicott turned up the offensive pressure even further. Gordon keeper Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) and a couple of the defenders combined for six saves in the first stages of the half as Endicott racked up 14 shots.

The Gulls got their break in the 59th minute when Hicks tripped on top of a ball in the circle and was called for a foul. Endicott received a penalty stroke and junior Ashleigh Allen (Glastonbury, Conn.) buried the shot in the top right corner for the equalizer. Endicott's game-winning opportunity came just three minutes later off a penalty corner. Emily Sawchuck (Cumberland, Maine) sent a perfect pass from the left side that eventually found the stick of an Endicott midfielder. The ball bounced around in front of the goal and freshman Maggie Layo (Sandwich, Mass.) poked it under Hicks for the winner.

Endicott outshot the Fighting Scots 20-5 in the game and came up with a whopping 15 penalty corners.
