NORTON, Mass.—Gordon Volleyball struggled to find its footing in a tri-match with WPI and Wheaton College, falling to each school 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Fighting Scots have now lost three matches in a row and fall to 7-6 on the season entering conference play this week.
The first match of the day for the Fighting Scots was a rematch of the semifinal matchup at the Regis Invitational three weeks ago. Then, Gordon overcame a 2-1 deficit to defeat WPI 3-2 to set up a championship match with MIT in early September.
Gordon led for a majority of the first set, but found themselves tied late in the game at 22 points a side. A handful of errors down the stretch of the game pushed WPI to a 25-22 victory in the opener. The Fighting Scots were never able to recover from the opening-set loss, dropping the second set (25-19) and third set (25-11) in a sweep for the Engineers.
Faith Gerdes (Wall Lake, Iowa) finished with seven kills and Joy Kimmel (Madison, Conn.) dished out 20 assists in the loss.
Wheaton (Mass.) dismantled WPI in the opener of the tri-match 3-0, but Gordon was hoping for a turn of fortune in its second match of the day. The Lyons jumped on the Fighting Scots early and fended off a last-minute rally to pull out the 25-21 opening set. Wheaton led by as many as 15 points in the second set, opening up a 20-5 lead, and drew within a game at 25-12. The Lyons finished off the Fighting Scots in the closing set, 25-21, despite a solid serving effort by Kimmel—she had three service aces against the Lyons.
Gordon opens up its Commonwealth Coast Conference schedule with back-to-back tough matches at Western New England on Wednesday and at Endicott next Saturday.
