Match Box ScoreWENHAM, Mass.—Gordon College Men's Tennis finished its fall season a perfect 2-0 after handing visiting Springfield College a 6-3 loss on Monday afternoon. The Fighting Scots took two of three doubles matches and finished off a handful of tight singles matches down low for the statement victory over the Pride.
Â
In their second match of the fall the Fighting Scots looked to build off an impressive 5-4 win over Regis College last Thursday. A NEWMAC power in Springfield College created a new set of problems, but a reloaded Gordon squad didn't shy away from the challenge from the outset. Gordon's top two doubles teams jumped on the Pride very early on and kept enough distance between them to pull out two important points.
Â
Freshmen Michael D'Antuono (Mapleville, R.I.) and Peter Godwin (Manchester, Conn.) looked sharp in handing the Pride an 8-2 loss at the second doubles slot over Justin Danielewicz (Portland, Conn.) and Kyle Beynor (Prospect, Conn.). The Pride fought back at third doubles where Cody Rodrigues (Westfield, Mass.) and Joshua Robinson (Southhold, N.Y.) doubled up Joe Daugherty (Norfolk, Va.) and James Hawn (Southborough, Mass.), 8-4. Springfield fell behind early in the first double spot, but Zach Hall (Sugar Land, Texas) and Mason Casady (Santa Barbara, Calif.) gave the Scots the advantage with an 8-5 win.
Â
Springfield evened up the score when Danielewicz took a quick 6-3, 6-0 win over Casady at the second flight. D'Antuono returned the favor at third singles with a straight-set victory over Beynor—6-4, 6-4. Hawn brought the Fighting Scots within a point of clinching the victory with his 7-5, 6-3 win over Grant at fourth singles. Only moments later, junior captain Hall provided the triumph Gordon needed to shock the Pride. Hall shook off a slow start and defeated Tanner DeVarennes (Lee, Mas.) 7-5, 6-2.
Â
The two squads split the final two matches on the court after overall had already been decided. Godwin completed the perfect day with a comeback three-set win at fifth singles over Rodrigues. Robinson earned Springfield's final point of the day with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over Daugherty at sixth singles.
Â
As a team, Gordon will resume its match play in Hilton Head, South Carolina over spring break. Hall and Casady will travel to Middlebury College this weekend for the ITA Regionals.
