Fighting Scots Pummel Golden Bears 3-0 on the Road

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—Aaron Terjanian's (West Chester, Pa.) score less than three minutes into the first half spurred the Fighting Scots to dominant 3-0 win at Western New England  in a Commonwealth Coast Conference men's soccer game at Suprenant Field on Saturday. The Golden Bears dropped just their first home loss in six outings (4-1-1) and go to 6-4-1 on the season, including 1-2 in the CCC. Gordon--ranked 8th in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America—maintains first place in the conference standings while improving to 8-1 overall.

The Fighting Scots were searching for answers after a frustratingly first loss of the season at Eastern Connecticut State on Tuesday. Western New England was riding high off a big win at Wesleyan on Wednesday and the two previous results made for an interesting matchup in the third CCC contest for each school.

Gordon took the opening kickoff and immediately put the pressure on the Golden Bears' defense. Western New England didn't look prepared for Gordon's quick-tempo attack and a breakdown in the defense led for an easy score in the game's third minute. Evan Crocker (Akron, Ohio) split two defenders out wide to find an open Daniel Perez (Bedford, Mass.) outside to the left. Perez took one touch back toward the net and drilled a pass on the ground across the 18-yard box. Terjanian stood virtually by himself from about eight yards from the goal and tapped the ball into the net for the easy score.

The quick goal shell-shocked WNE's defense and the shots from Gordon just kept on coming. Terjanian looked like he might score his second of the contest in the eighth minute after another botched defensive clear, but his attempt went just high of the crossbar. Gordon continued to pepper the Western New England net with good boots by Caleb Cole (Coatesville, Pa.) and John Schwien (Garnet Valley, Pa.), but the Golden Bears temporarily kept the Scots from adding another with saves. Crocker turned the momentum even further in Gordon's favor in the 17th minute when he beat three Golden Bears to the near post. Crocker turned outside then inside before flicking a ball under a sliding Kevin Strobel for the second score.

Gordon outshot the Golden Bears 13-6 in the first half and 5-2 in shots on target. The second half was much of the same for Gordon, as they continued to frustrating WNE's defensive unit. A couple of close calls in the early part of the second stanza gave way to a third goal off the foot of Perez. A tired Golden Bears' midfield had a hard time getting back on a change of possession, which left Schwien wide open in the middle of the field. He sent a crisp pass to Perez outside to the left of the goal. The Gordon sophomore took a quick cut back inside and struck a powerful ball that rose until it hit to upper-right corner of the net.

Bruce Gerberich (Fredericksburgh, Pa.) nabbed his second shutout in three starts, filling in for injured starter Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, Pa.). The junior transfer made three saves for the cleansheet. Gordon had 10 shots on goal compared to only three for Western New England.

The Fighting Scots return home for the first time in two weeks on Tuesday, when non-conference Lasell College rolls in for a 7 p.m. kick.
