Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker to UNE in Five

WENHAM, Mass.—A back-and-forth battle between host Gordon and visiting University of New England fell in favor of the Nor'easters in a Commonwealth Coast Conference volleyball showdown. The Nor'easters took the fifth set, 15-9, to win their second CCC match of the season, as the Fighting Scots dropped their sixth consecutive match.

The first set was the ultimate game of runs with each team using stretches of four or more points to trade the lead back and forth. Gordon opened the first set strong and led 8-6 after a bad set by Nikki Matthewson. UNE countered to take seven of the next eight points to open a four-point lead. Once again Gordon used two different runs to eventually take a lead 18-17 and forced the Nor'easters into a run-stopping timeout.

The strategy worked well for UNE, as they managed a six-point run to take a 23-18 advantage late in the first set. Gordon won three consecutive points from there, but the Nor'easters picked up the final two points for the early 1-0 lead.

The second set was all Gordon from the start. The Fighting Scots opened a 17-7 lead fairly quickly thanks to a mix of well-timed attacks and some misses by the Nor'easters attack. UNE crept within five points several times for the remainder of the game, but no closer and the Scots held on for a 25-18 win to even the score.

The third set followed a similar script as the first with the two teams even at 14-14 halfway through the game. Once again, Gordon and UNE traded points over the next stretch, but the Nor'easters held the late lead 22-21. Gordon looked like they might have a chance to tie the set, but UNE shut the door for a 25-21 third-set win.

Gordon was near flawless early in the fourth set, frustrating the Nor'easters with several blocks and kills during long runs of points. The Fighting Scots came within a point of tying the match at two, 24-15, when the Nor'easters rallied off eight straight points to pull back within a point. Gordon caught a break when Brooke Gibbons' serve sailed into the net and the Fighting Scots escaped with a 25-23 victory in the fourth.

The Fighting Scots started out flat in the deciding game, quickly falling behind 8-2 to the former CCC powerhouse. Feeding off of the crowd, Gordon climbed back into the game and trailed 10-9 with the serve. A timeout by the Nor'easters refocused their efforts and five straight points won finished off the thrilling five-set victory.

Leah Janelle had an impressive 16 kills for the Nor'easters and a .271 hitting percentage. Gibbons put up 29 assists and added a team-high 22 digs in a great all-around match for the setter. Courtney Lambrese finished second on the team with 11.5 points thanks to two solo blocks and three block assists.

Gordon was led by Faith Gerdes (Wall Lake, Iowa) with 13 kills and a .150 hitting percentage. Jessica Burdick (Brewerton, N.Y.) and Laura Schmidt (Stuart, Fla.) each tallied 11 kills on the evening. Joy Kimmel (Madison, Conn.) had a great night setting the ball and finished with 42 assists. Maggie Risma (Hudson, Ohio) had 30 digs on defense.

Gordon falls to 7-9 overall and 0-3 in CCC play. UNE improves to 4-9 on the season and 2-1 in conference. The Fighting Scots are back in action on Thursday when they host non-conference opponent Southern Maine.
