WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Men's Soccer staved off a late rally from host Nichols to hand the Bison their first head-to-head loss since the fall of 2012. Freshman Tyler Modzeleski (Cazenovia, N.Y.) continued his hot stretch with a goal and assist, while first-year Danny Nkhalamba (Concord, N.H.) put home his first career score for the game-winner in a 3-2 victory.
Modzeleski put the Scots on the board in the 18
th minute. Danny Perez (Billerica, Mass.) carried the ball down the field on the right side and sent a cross into the box. Modzeleski used his frame to get above the defense and head the ball into the twine for the opener.
Gordon added its second score of the game in the 34
th minute, as the Scots continued to press the Bison. Sammy Wilson (Ansonia, Conn.) ripped a shot at Patrick Porpora, but it was initially stopped by the Bison keeper. Josh Cochran (Bellville, Ohio) was there to clean up the mess for his third goal of the season.
The Fighting Scots looked to put things out of reach early in the first half, but two prime opportunities were rejected. The Bison countered in the 64
th minute with a goal off a set piece. Ryan Banker got a head on a Dave Melanson corner and it bounded past Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, Pa.)
Gordon was quick to answer back. Modzeleski ripped a shot after getting the ball back to refocus the Scots, but Porpora was there for the stop. Gordon was able to keep the ball in its offensive zone, as Modzeleski found Nkhalamba on a cross. The freshman midfielder was open in the middle of the 18-yard box and was able to beat Porpora low for the 3-1 lead. In the 65
th minute.
Nichols scored a third goal in less than three minutes when Banker found the back of the net for the second time.
The Scots were able to hold off two more Bison counters over the final 20 minutes to secure their first win over Nichols in their last four tries.
Spoonhour made three saves in goal for the Plaid.
The Scots (10-3) will celebrate Senior Night on Wednesday against UNE at 7 p.m.
