Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Hawks Snatch Overtime Victory from Scots

BRISTOL, R.I.—Roger Williams' Abby Treweek (Lakeville, Mass.) scored with less than a minute remaining in the first overtime to beat Gordon 1-0. The game marked the second time the two teams played to a 1-0 contest, as the Fighting Scots took the first in the series earlier this month.

The Fighting Scots fall to 5-13 and 3-8 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference, while Roger Williams improves to 5-6 in the CCC. With the loss, Gordon has been knocked from postseason contention.

Gordon put the first two shots of the game on net, but defending CCC Rookie of the Week Mya Lunn (Marion, Mass.) was able to deflect both of them. A Gordon penalty corner in the 26th minute also did not yield a score for the visitors.

After being shut out of shot column for the first 26 minutes and change, Roger Williams put a flurry up near the end of the first half. Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) made one save, while a Gordon defender blocked another and the two teams went to halftime knotted at zero.

The Hawks came out of the second half more aggressive, but Gordon's defensive strength flexed its muscles to keep the hosts from scoring in regulation. Bailey Balmer (Perkasie, Pa.) and Lydia Ellsworth (West Chester, Pa.) combined for three defensive saves in the second half to send things to overtime.

Gordon had two good looks in the 81st minute of the game, but a pair of shots by Scots' attackers was deflected away from danger.

Treweek struck only a few moments later after Roger Williams earned a penalty corner on the other end. Katherine Mahoney (West Suffield, Conn.) was credited with the assist on a pass back from Treweek's penalty corner.

Hicks made four saves in between the pipes for the Scots. Lunn also stopped four scoring opportunities.

Gordon closes out its season next Wednesday against top-seeded UNE.
