Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Relentless Attack Spurs Scots to CCC Win

BOSTON, Mass.—Juniors Bailey Grinnell (South Hamilton, Mass.) and Jessie Castelline (Concord, Mass.) combined for 10 goals as Gordon Women's Lacrosse exploded for 17 goals in a win at Wentworth. The Fighting Scots scored five goals in the final three minutes of the first half to break open a close game and moved forward with a 17-5 win over the hosts in the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both teams.

Castelline was the big difference for the Scots early on. The junior attacker scored less than a minute into the game after a quick clear by Gordon. A lead was short lived however, with Wentworth's Pam Mudge (Hooksett, N.H.) notching her fifth goal of the season a few possessions later to tie the game at one.

Scoring opportunities were spotty over the next 10 minutes, with both teams figuring out each other's defensive scheme. Castelline scored the only two goals during the span with her 18th and 19th strikes of the season, assisted by Grinnell and Caroline Walton (Irvine, Calif.). Megan Avery (Rochester, N.H.) put the Scots up three goals just inside the halfway mark of the first period, off the dish from Castelline.

Wentworth's Amanda Dexter (Harvard, Mass.) cut into Gordon's lead with 13:11 to play in the first, but it was all Gordon from there.

After 10 minutes of no scoring, Abby Illian's (Hillsdale, N.J.) goal with 2:51 remaining opened the floodgates for the Scots. Grinnell, MC Aston (Greenwich, N.Y.) and Walton combined for four more goals before the end of the half—Walton's coming with just three ticks on the scoreboard.

Gordon took a 9-2 lead into the halftime break and were not slowed down coming out of the locker rooms. Illian and Wentworth's Molly Dufresne (Plaistow, N.H.) traded goals in the first three minutes of the second half to make it a 10-3 game. The Fighting Scots would scored seven of the next eight goals notched, spanning 17 minutes, to take firm control of the contest.

The Leopards' Jessica Houghton (Billerica, Mass.) scored the final goal of the game with 6:43 left in regulation.

Three Gordon players finished with at least a hat-trick, Grinnell (six goals), Castelline (four goals) and Illian (three goals). Castelline turned in a four-goal, three-assist performance for the third time this spring after being held out of the box score in a loss to Emerson on Tuesday. Walton scored her first two goals of the season, while also contributing two assists and a team-high four ground balls.

Sophomore Jackie Kiernan (Lexington, Mass.) played three-fourths of the game, earning her third win of the season and made seven saves. Zita Nagel (Wayland, Mass.) came in of relief and surrendered only one goal.

Gordon (3-3) has a quick turnaround as they travel to Salem State on Monday, a game that was originally scheduled for before spring break.
