Golden Bears Slow Down Scots' Attack, 19-8

WENHAM, Mass.—Western New England's Kaitlynn Stevens (Stratford, Conn.) and Taylor Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) combined for nine goals and five assists to lead the visiting Golden Bears to a 19-8 win over Gordon at the Brigham Athletic Complex turf on Tuesday afternoon. Jessica Castelline (Concord, Mass.) eighth hat trick in 10 games this season, but a big first-half effort allowed the Golden Bears to stay undefeated in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.
 
Abby Illian (Hillsdale, N.J.) started off the scoring less than a minute into the contest on a nice feed from Bailey Grinnell (South Hamilton, Mass.), giving Gordon a 1-0 lead.
 
The Golden Bears' offense was fierce from the very next draw control with Jessica Scannapieco (Blue Bell, Pa.) evening the score just two minutes after Illian's strike.  Stevens and Brooke Kumnick (Granby, Conn.) was an explosive combination for the Golden Bears all game. Kumnick dished out five assists in the game, three of which went to Stevens.
 
Ashley Brunner (Stratford, Conn.) and Scialdone also scored as a part of a 5-0 run in a four-minute stretch. Gordon was also credited with an own goal on a broken play.
 
Castelline counter-punched with her 30th goal of the season at the eight-minute mark before Stevens and Scannapieco each put one in the twine to make it a 7-2 game. MC Aston (Greenwich, N.Y.) and Illian closed the gap to three goals at the halfway point of the first half when the Golden Bears went on a tear.
 
Western New England closed the half on an 8-1 run with Gordon's only score being tabbed by Caroline Walton (Irvine, Calif.). Scialdone was the leading point getter in the first half with three goals and four assists before the break to give the Golden Bears a 15-5 lead.
 
The Golden Bears (8-1) stretched their lead to 12 in the early portion of the second half, but the Fighting Scots closed the game on a 3-2 run, including Castelline's second and third goals of the day.
 
Scannapieco won a whopping 19 draw controls in the game to go with three goals, four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Stevens ended the day with six points coming from five goals and an assist. Scialdone finished with four goals and four assists, while Kumnick tacked on a goal and five assists.
 
Emily Castleman (Wilbraham, Mass.) made eight saves to earn the win for the Golden Bears, while Jackie Kiernan (Lexington, Mass.) took the loss with six saves.
 
Aside from Castelline's torrid hat-trick pace continue, Illian had a solid game with two goals, six ground balls and three draw controls.
 
Western New England stays on the road two days from now with a non-conference game at Bridgewater State. Gordon (5-5) also has a non-conference game at home against New England College a week from Tuesday night.
