Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Scots Find Cornucopia of Scoring, Beat Pilgrims 20-6

WENHAM, Mass.—Junior Bailey Grinnell (South Hamilton, Mass.) had a season-high nine points and helped Gordon Women's Lacrosse notch a 20-6 win over non-conference foe New England College on Monday at the Brigham Athletic Complex. Three other Gordon players picked up hat-tricks, but Grinnell stole the show with six goals and three assists against the Pilgrims.

The Fighting Scots rebounded from a two-game losing streak and improve to 6-5 on the season. The Pilgrims drops to 2-9 and 1-7 in non-conference action.

New England College was the first offense to show signs of life. After dodging two attempts from the Scots, the Pilgrims but the first two goals on the board in just over three minutes of play. Gabriella Bigos (Branford, Conn.) turned a defensive mistake by the Scots into an unassisted score past goalkeeper Zita Nagel (Wayland, Mass.). The Pilgrims scored against 40 seconds later with a breakaway attempt. Jacquelyn Lane (Scituate, Mass.) was the beneficiary of good transition offense by Elizabeth Bois (Westbrook, Maine) and put the Grims up by two.

The Fighting Scots fought back with a three-goal run of their own, started by leading scorer Jessie Castelline (Concord, Mass.). Abby Illian (Hillsdale, N.J.) scored in the seventh minute of the game on a feed from Castelline and Grinnell made it 3-2 Gordon on a wrap-around score.

Directly off of the impending draw control, Allison Granata (Norwalk, Conn.) and Bigos performed a nifty give-and-go to even the game at three with 21:15 remaining in the first.

Granata's goal sparked an avalanche from the Gordon offense. The Fighting Scots ended the half on an 9-1 run, including eight straight goals in a 10-minute span. Six different Scots scored during the run, including two from both Grinnell and Illian. Lindsey Congdon (Exeter, N.H), MC Aston (Greenwich, N.Y.), Megan Avery (Rochester, N.H.) and Castelline each totaled one.

The Pilgrims' shifty attacker, Granata, found the back of the net to break Gordon's 8-0 run, but Avery scored a goal for the Scots in the final minute of the half to make it a 12-4 game at halftime.

Gordon extended its lead to 17-4 over the first 17 minutes of the second half. Blake Orndorff (Churchville, Md.) and Grinnell scored the first four goals of the run before Castelline ended it with 13:42 to play in regulation.

The Fighting Scots outscored the Pilgrims 3-2 over the final two minutes of the game. Bigos ended a 5-0 Gordon run with her 24th goal of the season and senior Bridget Couture (Worcester, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season with three seconds remaining. Orndorff completed her first career hat-trick for the Fighting Scots. Hannah Schilke (Westerly, R.I.) and Grinnell added Gordon's final two strikes of the day.

Mackenzie Meegan (Phoenix, Ariz.) took the loss, but made 13 saves for the Pilgrims. Jordan Zeiba-Peoples (Taunton, Mass.) came in relief of Meegan and made three saves as well. Meegan had a game-high four ground balls and Bigos tied Gordon's Grinnell with nine draw controls.

Grinnell, Illian, Castelline and Orndorff all put forth hat-tricks. Castelline and Grinnell also added three assists to their eye-popping stats. The Fighting Scots were 7-14 on free-position attempts in the game compared to an 0-for-3 performance from the Pilgrims.

Nagel earned her first collegiate win, making four saves in a complete-game effort.

The Fighting Scots have a day off on Tuesday before returning to conference action on Wednesday at Curry. NEC is home tomorrow against Johnson State in a NAC matchup.
