Scots Earn Texas-Sized Win Over Monarchs

GEORGETOWN, Texas—Gordon Women's Lacrosse got into the win column in a big way on Saturday evening, besting King's College (Pa.) 17-4 on a lukewarm evening at Southwestern University. MC Aston (Greenwich, N.Y.) and Jess Castelline (Concord, Mass.) each piled up four goals in the rout of the Monarchs to give the Fighting Scots their first win of the 2015 season.

Abby Illian (Hillsdale, N.J.) opened the scoring just 40 seconds into the game off a pass from Castelline. After Castelline won the first draw control, she found Illian open for the quick goal to put their opponents on skates. Aston made it 2-0 just a minute later for her first goal of the season.

After King's scored at the 26-minute mark, Gordon went on a 5-0 run over the next 17 minutes to put the Monarchs in a big hole. Lindsey Congdon (Exeter, N.H.), Castelline, Rebecca Smith (Verona, N.J.) and Bailey Grinnell (South Hamilton, Mass.) made up the five goals during the stretch.

King's Breanne Schurgot (Easton, Pa.) got one back for the Monarchs, but Gordon scored twice more during the first half for a 9-2 advantage at the break. Gordon's Jackie Kiernan (Lexington, Mass.) only allowed two goals in the first half and made three saves before giving way to Zita Nagel (Wayland, Mass.) at halftime.

The Monarchs scored the first goal of the second half, but the Fighting Scots tallied the next eight to turn the game into a lop-sided result.

Aston turned in a career-high four goals on five shots, while Castelline continued her strong play with four goals and three assists. The junior also had a team high four draw control wins on the day. Smith, a senior, completed her first career hat-trick with a goal early in the second half. Nagel turned in a similar performance to Kiernan with three saves and two goals against in the final period.

Gordon totaled 36 shots to only 13 for the Monarchs, while also grabbing 34 ground balls—including a team-high five for Illian.

Gordon will look to pull even in the win column when they play host Southwestern on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET.
