SALEM, Mass. —Salem State defeated Gordon College 10-3 on Wednesday afternoon at the Central Campus Baseball Field. Salem's Jason Vizena (Gloucester, Mass.) earned the win in relief, pitching three innings while allowing just a run on three hits with two strikeouts. The win improves the Vikings record to 8-5 while the Fighting Scots fall to 4-9 on the season.
Salem State starter Ryan Kelleher (Hanover, Mass.) came out in the fifth inning, having pitched four innings of three-hit ball without allowing a run. Kelleher struck out the side in the first while the Vikings' Richard Fecteau (Newbury, Mass.) hit a RBI single in the opening frame to give his team a 1-0 lead. After hitting a double in the second, Jose Cedano (Lawrence, Mass.) came around to score on a balk to increase Salem State's lead to 2-0.
Gordon threated in the fourth by loading the bases with one out. However, Fecteau made a diving stab on a line drive by
Jesse Amaya (South Gate, CA) to preserve the lead and Salem State worked out of the inning without allowing a run.
Ryan Beliveau (Lynn, Mass.) gave the Vikings some breathing room with a two-run single in the fifth.
The Fighting Scots finally broke the plane of the plate in the sixth on a double play, but George Tsonis (Peabody, Mass.) scored on a passed ball in the bottom half of the inning to put the Vikings' lead back to five.
Tristan Ryan (Orlando, Fla.) came on to pitch in the seventh for Gordon, and Salem State opened up the game, scoring four runs to take a 10-1 lead. Cedano smashed another hit for an RBI, and Tsonis and Andrew Deloury (Andover, Mass.) produced back-to-back run scoring singles. Kevin Carens (Northborough, Mass.) knocked in the final Salem run with a sacrifice fly.
The Fighting Scots' starter
Colin Strapp (Philadelphia, Pa.) took the loss after giving up six runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts in six innings of work.
Matt Moffat (Stratford, Conn.) plated two runs for the Fighting Scots in the ninth. Cedano finished 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Vikings while
Addison Tarr (Oxnard, Calif.) added a pair of hits for Gordon.
Salem State's next game is at home against the University of Southern Maine Huskies at 3:30 PM on Thursday. Gordon College also plays again Thursday against Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I. for a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader.
