BRISTOL, R.I.—The Gordon College baseball team earned a split with Roger Williams on Thursday afternoon and improved to 3-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.
Jesse Amaya (South Gate, Calif.) accounted for two of Gordon's three runs in a 3-2 win in game one. Roger Williams exploded for eight runs in the nightcap to even the season series at one game apiece.
Scott Hall (Weymouth, Mass.) pitched a gem for the Fighting Scots in the game one of the doubleheader. The tall righty outdueled Roger Williams All-American George Lund (West Hartford, Conn.) to the tune of five strikeouts and two runs allowed over a complete game effort.
The Hawks first threatened in the top of the second inning, but Hall didn't allow Reid Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.) to score from second on a single to the outfield. Gordon made Roger Williams pay in the bottom half of the inning when Amaya poked in the first run of the game with a single to right field to plate
Alex Smith (Wethersfield, Conn.).
Gordon stretched its lead to three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Smith led off with a single to the deep part of the infield, forcing no play at first base. The Gordon shortstop advanced to second on a groundout and was eventually ushered across home plate by Amaya two batters later. After a wild pitch and a walk for
Jared Kefalas (Wenham, Mass.),
Jeremy Jackson (Waco, Texas) knocked in Amaya to put the Scots up by three.
Hall held the Hawks scoreless until the top of the sixth inning. Caulin Rogers (Gloucester, Mass.) made it to first on an error and Kevin Baker (Wilbraham, Mass.) capitalized with a two-run jack. However, the Gordon starter was able to shutdown Roger Williams in the final frame to preserve a narrow win.
Lund took the loss, giving up three runs in 6.0 innings with four Ks. Chris Travers (East Freetown, Mass.), Shawn Cariglio (Milford, Conn.), and Reid Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.) each finished 1-for-3 in the game.
The second game saw the Hawks jump out early, scoring five runs in the top of the first. The Hawks were took advantage of a dropped fly ball in the outfield after back-to-back walks to load the bases. Bryan Terzian (Westport, Conn.) and Travers each stepped up with a two-RBI double, while Nelson scored on a wild pitch.
In the third, Travers made it an 8-0 Roger Williams lead, bombing a three run home run to left field and scoring Nelson and Jamie Timothy (Cohasset, Mass.).
Gordon added runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Smith and
Alonzo Martinez (El Paso, Texas) led off the fourth with back-to-back triples, while Smith scored on a bobbled ball in the infield an inning later. That would be the only runs for the Fighting Scots in the game as the Hawks picked up their first home win of the year.
Tyler Campo (Wrentham, Mass.) earned his first win of the season, striking out a career-high 11 in the complete game. Travers was 2-for-3 with five RBI and a run, while Timothy went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Matt Amore (Pequannock, N.J.) allowed all eight runs (seven earned) in 2.1 innings in the loss.
Caleb Bae (Canyon Country, Calif.) came in relief of Amore and pitched four and two-thirds of shutout baseball, while only giving up two hits. Martinez went 2-for-3 with an RBI while Jackson was 1-for-2 with a run scored.
Roger Williams (3-13, 1-3 CCC) will host Becker College on Tuesday, while Gordon (5-10, 3-1 CCC) will play Lasell.
