Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women's Lacrosse Falls 10-7 in Rivalry Matchup

WENHAM, Mass.—Endicott Women's Lacrosse scored six times in the opening 10 minutes to put Gordon in a big hole and held on for a 10-7 win over the Fighting Scots. Gordon's Caroline Walton (Irvine, Calif.) scored a game and career-high four goals, but it was not enough to complete a second half comeback. Sophomore Emily Whitney (Rye, N.H.) had a hat-trick and an assist for the Gulls in victory.

The Gulls keep pace with the top teams in the Commonwealth Coast Conference at 5-1 in conference play and improve to 9-4 overall. Gordon drops to .500 in the CCC and 7-7 overall.

Whitney started off the scoring less than two minutes into the first half on a pick play set up by teammate Emily Cutting (Ferrisburgh, Vt.). The Gulls struck again directly off the impending draw control, as Kirsten Thor (Longmeadow, Mass.) put one home off the feed from Whitney.

Endicott made it 3-0 in its favor in the sixth minute when Ellie Clayman (Beverly, Mass.) fired a free-position shot past Jackie Kiernan (Lexington, Mass.). After Meghan Lennon (Canton, Mass.) added an unassisted score to put the Gulls up four, Whitney poured in another goal on an assist from Siri Mason (Williamstown, Mass.). Mason put in a free-position goal herself with 19:14 remaining in the first half to give Endicott a commanding lead.

Bailey Grinnell (South Hamilton, Mass.) finally broke the radio silence with an unassisted score on a wrap around in the 13th minute.

Neither team scored for 11 minutes until Mason scored her second of the afternoon on a cross from Lennon. Gordon responded with two straight goals within a minute of each other, each being free-position finishes by the sophomore Walton.

Endicott's Cutting added a goal with less than 30 ticks in the first half to push its lead to five at the break.

Gordon outscored the Gulls 4-2 in the second half after settling down on defense and preventing Endicott's leading scorers, Whitney and Clayman, from having any clean looks. Abby Illian (Hillsdale, N.J.) scored the first goal of the half on a free-position attempt, but Whitney converted a hat-trick four minutes later to keep Gordon at bay.

The two teams traded goals again in the middle of the period to put the Gulls up 10-5, approaching the final quarter of time on the clock. Walton and Megan Avery (Rochester, N.H.) put in two goals in the final three minutes to put some pressure on Endicott, but the Gulls made a few key saves down the stretch to preserve the win.

Maura Grady (Marblehead, Mass.) made eight saves and allowed only five goals against the Scots to improve to 9-4 in net.  Kiernan made six stops in the loss.

Endicott won the ground ball battle 17-13, but Gordon had a slight advantage in draw controls, 11-9. Grinnell won a game-high seven draw controls for the Scots.

The Gulls stay on the road this Saturday against the top dog in the CCC, Western New England. Gordon has Worcester State on Thursday before an away conference game at Nichols on Saturday.
