Furious Rally Pushes Scots Past Lancers

WORCESTER, Mass.—Senior Abby Illian (Hillsdale, N.J.) scored a goal with a minute and a half remaining in the overtime period to send Gordon to a comeback win at Worcester State on Thursday night. The Fighting Scots trailed by as many as seven goals in the first half, but a five-goal effort by junior Jessie Castelline (Concord, Mass.) gave the Scots a boost to complete the big rally.

MASCAC favorite Worcester State came out of the chute on fire. Leading scorer Kaila Chase (Northbridge, Mass.) scored four times in the first half, including one just two minutes into the game on a feed from Jackie Connors (Ashland, Mass.). Connors also assisted on an Alaina Martin (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) goals just a few minutes later to put the Lancers up by two.

After Castelline made it a one-goal game in the 11th minute, Worcester State went on a 6-0 run over the next 18 minutes leading into the half. Chase, Connors and Alexis Vecchiarelli (Agawam, Mass.) accounted for all six scores.

Castelline scored her 44th goal of the year with 49 seconds remaining in the first half and Gordon trailed the Lancers 8-2 after 30 minutes. Worcester State outshot Gordon 19-7 in the first half and won seven of 11 draw controls. Gordon also struggled to get the ball out of their defensive end, clearing the ball only once out of six tries.

The two teams traded three goals over the first 15 minutes of the second half, as Worcester State maintained its six-goal lead, when Gordon made a big run.

The Fighting Scots scored the final six goals of regulation, all by their top three scorers this season. Castelline put in her third and fourth goals of the day in the 45th and 48th minutes to cut the deficit to four. Bailey Grinnell (South Hamilton, Mass.) added back-to-back scores in under two minutes before Castelline scored again to make it an 11-10 game with six to play.

Illian completed the comeback in the 56th minute by finishing off a Castelline pass and helping send the time to an extra period.

Worcester State's Angelina Sutherland (Tyngsboro, Mass.) broke the streak just 30 seconds into the overtime period to give the Lancers a 12-11 lead.

Down to the final two minutes, Caroline Walton (Irvine, Calif.) evened the score at 12 with an unassisted goal. Grinnell won the following draw control and possession fell in the hands of Illian's stick. The senior completed her hat-trick with 1:25 on the clock in overtime to clinch victory for the Scots.

Zita Nagel (Wayland, Mass.) was credited with the victory after coming in for relief of Jackie Kiernan (Lexington, Mass.). Nagel made six saves in 48 minutes to earn her second win of the season.

Gordon has two important conference games on the docket heading toward the conclusion of the regular season. The Fighting Scots travel to Dudley for an 11 a.m. start against Nichols on Saturday before the season finale at home against UNE next Wednesday.
