Fighting Scots Blitz Bison in Second Half of 21-10 Win

DUDLEY, Mass. —The second-half runs continued to Gordon Women's Lacrosse, as the Fighting Scots put up 14 goals in the final period on their way to a 21-10 win at Nichols on Saturday morning at Vendetti Field. Jessie Castelline (Concord, Mass.) finished a whopping nine goals and added an assist to lead Gordon to an import Commonwealth Coast Conference win over the rival Bison.

The Bison (5-10, 2-5 CCC) were tied 7-7 at the end of the first half as well as 14-14 in the shot category, however, the Fighting Scots (9-7, 4-3 CCC) rattled off 13 unanswered second half goals to take the win.

Only two days after a slow start in an overtime win over Worcester State, Gordon struggled to find any flow on offense against the Bison. Nichols scored six of the first eight goals of the game, all by different players, and put the Scots on their heels.

Gordon went on a 5-1 run to end the first half, including two goals each from Castelline and Caroline Walton (Irvine, Calif.). The Scots and Bison tied with 14 shots each on the first half, but Nichols held slight advantages in the ground balls and draw control categories.

The Scots were a different team in the second half, building off of their run to end the opening period. Nichols took one-goal leads at 8-7 and 9-8, but it was all Gordon from there. Between the 38th and 57th minutes of regulation, Gordon outscored the Bison 13-0 to turn a close game into a blowout.

Seniors Grace Murphy (Montclair, Va.), Alyssa Bufis (Linden, N.J.) and Erica Antonison (Albertson, N.Y.) each potted two goals in their final home game for the Bison while sophomore Olivia Morawski (Fairfield, Conn.) and junior Meghan Dombkowski (Sagaponack, N.Y.) added one.

Walton and senior Abby Illian (Hillsdale, N.J.) each had four goals while junior Bailey Grinnell (South Hamilton, Mass.) added two.

Sophomore Katherine Cotton (Kennebunk, Maine) falls to 5-10 on the season after making six saves. Freshman Zita Nagel (Wayland, Mass.) started the game for the Fighting Scots and made three saves after playing the entire first half. Sophomore Jackie Kiernan (Lexington, Mass.) earned her seventh victory of the year after making two saves in the second half.

The Bison travel to take on conference foe Roger Williams on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. The Fighting Scots play at UNE on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
