Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Scots Pull Off Wild Comeback at Home

WENHAM, Mass.—The second half heroics continued for Gordon Women's Lacrosse, storming back from a six-goal deficit to take a 15-14 win over the University of New England. The Nor'easters controlled the game for the first 45 minutes, but a furious rally from the Scots led them to their third consecutive comeback victory. Jessie Castelline (Concord, Mass.) had five goals for the Fighting Scots, including the game-tying and game-winning goals in the last three minutes of regulation.

The two evenly matched squads expected a back-and-forth game coming into Wednesday, but no one could have imagined how the pivotal contest would unfold. After Bailey Grinnell (South Hamilton, Mass.) scored the opening goal of the game just 30 seconds into the first half, UNE went on a 7-0 run in just over 10 minutes and looked on its way to running away with it early.

Hannah Warren (Harrison, Maine) was a major contributor for the Nor'easters during their run. She scored three of UNE's first four goals with a Nikki Smith (Shapleigh, Maine) goal squeezed in between. Gina Newsome (Danbury, Conn.) put home her 31st and 32nd goals of the season in a two-minute stretch to give the Nor'easters a 6-1 lead with 20 minutes to play in the first. Jessica Deedon (Sherman, Conn.) capped off the run in the 11th minute on a feed from Smith.

Caroline Walton (Irvine, Calif.) finally ended the drought in the 16th minute on an unassisted score to make it 7-2, but Rachel Schwaner (Holderness, N.H.) answered right back with a quick goal.

MC Aston (Greenwich, N.Y.) picked up a lose ball in front of the net with 11:14 remaining in the first half and scooped a shot past Courtney Kendall (Waltham, Mass.) for Gordon's third goal. Castelline cut the Nor'easters lead in half at 8-4 with an unassisted goal as well.

The two teams traded goals back and forth for the remainder of the half, including Deedon's second and third scores of the game. The Nor'easters led 11-6 at the half when the dust settled, while putting all 15 of their shots on frame. Jackie Kiernan (Lexington, Mass.) could only get her stick on four of the UNE shots in the first half.

Gordon put the pressure on UNE by scoring the first three goals of the second half. Grinnell, Walton and Castelline all found the twine on shots taken in by their lonesome.

The Nor'easters (7-9, 4-4 CCC) scored two of the next three goals, one by Newsome and one from Macki Hill (York Beach, Maine), to go up 13-10 with just over 15 minutes to play.

Abby Illian (Hillsdale, N.J.) got in on the scoring at the 46-minute mark on a feed from Castelline. Gordon's leading scorer, Castelline, brought Gordon within one goal just three minutes later before Illian tied the game at 13 on a nifty pass from Megan Avery (Rochester, N.H.).

The Nor'easters went back ahead out of the timeout when Hill went the distance for her second goal of the game with just over seven minutes to go.

Gordon (10-7, 5-3 CCC) was unable to find the equalizer over the next four minutes when the Scots went into hyperdrive. Castelline scored her 60th goal of the season on a long crossing pass from Blake Orndorrf (Churchville, Md.) with 2:47 to go, tying the game at 14 goals apiece.

UNE took possession of the impending draw control, but turned the ball over twice in the next two minutes to give the Scots another chance. Illian picked up a loose ball and cleared the ball before handing it off to Castelline. The junior made a move on her mark and sliced a shot under Kendall for the lead.

Gordon won the next draw control, but turned the ball over with 10 seconds left. Schwaner quickly made her way downfield and launched a pass just above a teammates' stick in front of the Gordon goal as time expired on the clock.

Kiernan notches the win while making seven saves. Kendall re-entered 10 minutes into the second half after being taken out at halftime and was credited with the loss. The junior made nine saves in the decision.

The two teams will play each other again on Saturday in the first round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament right back at the Brigham Athletic Complex at 1 p.m.
