WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Men's Tennis clinched a home match in the upcoming Commonwealth Coast Conference playoffs with an 8-1 win over visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology. The Fighting Scots took all three doubles matches to set an early tone before coming up with five of six singles flights. Senior
Dan Christensen (Attleboro, Mass.) won in both singles and doubles on Senior Day, while Sean Nolan (Newport, R.I.) provided the Leopards with their lone win of the match.
The Fighting Scots controlled the match from the outset with three sound victories in doubles.
Mike D'Antuono (Mapleville, R.I.) and
Peter Godwin (Manchester, Conn.) gave the Scots their first win of the day with an 8-3 triumph at second doubles.
Zach Hall (Sugar Land, Texas) and
Mason Casady (Santa Barbara, Calif.) doubled up their opponents 8-4 at the top flight.
Joe Daugherty (Norfolk, Va.) and Christensen met resistance from Mike Withington (Plymouth, Mass.) and Nolan third doubles, but ultimately prevailed 8-5.
Godwin brought Gordon within a point of victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Zach Peter (Preston, Conn.) at fourth singles. Casady provided the clinching point with a 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Jeff Tocco (Plymouth, Mass.). Hall dished out a similar result to James Drum (Madison, Conn.) at first singles to push the match to 6-0.
Christensen also picked up a straight-set win in singles play with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Withington at the fifth flight.
James Hawn (Southborough, Mass.) had to fight through a close two-set match against Dylan Melnik (Raleigh, N.C.) at third singles, 6-3, 6-4.
Nolan gave the Leopards with their only point of the day at sixth singles. The senior fought off Gordon sophomore
George Black (Gloucester, Mass.) in the first set 6-4, before closing it out in the second set 6-3.
The loss eliminates Wentworth from postseason hopes just a year after the Leopards knocked Gordon from playoff contention. The Leopards finish the season at 4-9 and 2-6 in the CCC.
Gordon concludes its non-conference slate tomorrow at home against Rhode Island College before a pivotal matchup at Endicott on Saturday. The Gordon-Endicott match will decide the third and fourth seeds in the CCC championships.
Gordon clinched its highest conference seed ever during Peter Amadon's tenure with the win on Wednesday.
