PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The undefeated season came to a halt on Monday for the Gordon Men's Tennis team, suffering a 6-3 to non-conference opponent Johnson & Wales at Rhode Island College. The Fighting Scots lost for the first time in 10 matches this season, while the Wildcats move to 4-1 on the year.
Zach Hall (Sugar Land, Texas) and Mason Casady (Santa Barbara, Calif.) remained undefeated in dual match play with an easy 8-1 win at the first doubles flight. However, the other two doubles matches were a struggle for the Fighting Scots. The Wildcats narrowly escaped with an 8-5 win at second doubles and an 8-6 win at third doubles to put the Scots in a 2-1 hole.
Monday marked the first time Gordon has trailed after doubles' competition this season.
Gordon got a point back with Hall's 6-4, 6-2 win over Andre Barbero at first singles, but that would be the closest they would get for the remainder. Johnson & Wales won third, fifth and six singles in straight-set decisions to clinch the match for the Wildcats. Gordon's James Hawn (Southborough, Mass.) fought off a 6-0 loss in the first set to take the second set from Mariusz Wala, 6-4. Wala got the best of Hawn in the final set, 6-3, and pushed the Wildcats point total to six.
The Fighting Scots received their final point of the match from Casady, who outlasted Nicholas Auffret in three sets.
Gordon has a stiff test on the horizon when they travel to Dudley, Mass. to take on Commonwealth Coast Conference favorite Nichols on Wednesday.
