Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Splits Two at WPI Tri-Match

WORCESTER, Mass.—Gordon Volleyball split with Wheaton and host WPI at the Engineers' tri-match on Saturday afternoon. The Fighting Scots improved to 4-0 in five-set matches by surviving the Lyons in their first match of the day before falling to WPI in three sets.

The Scots' opening match of the day was a battle in its purest form. Neither team was able to get its offense in rhythm throughout as they traded the first four sets back and forth. Wheaton took the opener 25-19 before Gordon evened things in the second with a 25-20 win. The third and fourth sets followed a similar storyline with the teams splitting the two by identical 25-19 scores.

Gordon built a 10-4 lead in the fifth set and held off a late rally from the Lyons to pull its record to 7-5 on the year.

Carleigh Petersen (North Hills, Calif.) and Meghan Hokanson (Coon Rapids, Mich.) led the Fighting Scots with nine kills apiece. Petersen also led the Scots in digs with 17 on the afternoon. Renee Cooprider (Hopkinton, Mass.) served up 29 assists.

In the final game of the day, host WPI closed out the Fighting Scots in just three sets. The Engineers held comfortable leads during the first two sets before Gordon made things interesting in the final game. Gordon led the set 23-21, but WPI's Casey Hunt ended the match with three consecutive kills to pull off the sweep of the tri-match.

Mackenzie Hinds (Higganum, Conn.) led the Scots with nine kills and Petersen once again had a solid defensive effort with 20 digs. Hokanson contributed with two block assists.

Gordon continues its lengthy road trip when it heads down to Quincy for the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener with Eastern Nazarene on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
