Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Scots Dissipate Nor'easters for Conference Victory

WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Men's Basketball snapped a two-game skid as they returned to Commonwealth Coast Conference play with a commanding 83-64 win over visiting UNE on Tuesday evening. Sam Johnson (Chatham, Mass.) and Noah Szilagyi (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) each contributed 18 points in the midst of the Scots best shooting performance through 11 games.

Playing for the first time in exactly a month, UNE falls to 6-4 on the season and 1-2 in the CCC. Gordon takes a strong move back toward the .500 mark after losing four of its last five games. The Scots sit at 2-2 in the league and 5-6 overall.

Gordon's mission of stopping talented guard Devin Thompson (Winthrop, Mass.), who came into the night averaging 19.1 points per game, was noticeable from the tip. After opening the game with two made free throws the Fighting Scots held Thompson to only two points the rest of the way and forced the Nor'easters to rely on the long ball for offense.

The Scots raced out to a 13-2 lead over the game's first seven minutes with scoring contributions from four of five starters during the run. The Nor'easters began the game cold, including missing their first nine shots from deep until reserve guard Ben Judson (Plaistow, N.H.) made one with 13:09 on the clock in the first.

Three consecutive free throws by CJ Autry (Standish, Maine) brought the Nor'easters back within five points, but that would be the closest UNE would get for the remainder of the game.

Gordon held as large as an 18-point advantage in the first half and led 41-31 at the break. Szilagyi and Jake Haar (Huntington Beach, Calif.) came off the bench to combine for 17 points and 5-of-7 from deep in the first half. UNE's Judson also had a strong half with 10 points off the bench.

After Gordon started the second half with a little run, Drew Coveney (Londonderry, N.H.) hit a three to close the gap to eight. However, Johnson scored on three straight possessions to put the Fighting Scots up by double digits for good.

UNE remains on the road on Thursday when they head to Curry for a 7:30 p.m. start. Gordon travels down to Newport for a 7:30 tip at Salve Regina.

For the Foes
  • Judson, a first-year, scored a career-high 17 points to lead the Nor'easters on offense.
  • Autry had a stellar game with 14 points and 10 rebounds
  • Thompson was held to a season-low four points on just three attempts from the field.
  • Coveney had a well-rounded performance with nine assists, seven points and five boards.

For the Scots
  • Szilagyi broke his career high in points for the second consecutive game. After scoring 17 against Worcester State on Saturday, he followed it up with 18 against the Nor'easters. He has risen his scoring averaging by nearly two points since the holiday break.
  • Johnson rebounded from a tough game against Worcester State with 18 points and 12 boards. He leads the CCC in double-doubles with six in 11 games.
  • Garrisson Duvivier (Brockton, Mass.) led Gordon with 13 rebounds. He also put up eight points and six assists.
  • Haar scored all 11 of his points in the first half, but took the team lead in three-point percentage among qualifiers by making 42-percent of his attempts.
  • Gordon shot a season-high 53.2-percent from the field, its highest output since a close loss to Fisher College in 2014.
