Scots Survive Seahawks for Murphy's 100th Win

NEWPORT, R.I.—The Fighting Scots staved off a late rally by host Salve Regina to secure their second consecutive victory in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. Garrisson Duvivier (Brockton, Mass.) and Sam Johnson (Chatham, Mass.) both put up double-doubles to help Gordon head coach Tod Murphy get his 100th career victory with a 71-70 triumph.

The two squads played neck and neck early with neither holding more than a four-point advantage over the first 10 minutes of the opening half. Gordon held a 16-12 advantage during a three-minute scoring drought for both teams until Noah Szilagyi (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) extended it to nine with Gordon's first made triple of the game.

The Fighting Scots came into the night as one of the best three-point-shooting teams in the conference, but struggled to find their mark in the early going. Still, Gordon used a 15-0 stretch to turn a four-point deficit into a 23-12 lead with eight minutes to go in the first half.

Salve was never able to get closer than eight points before halftime and the Scots held a 38-27 advantage at the break. Duvivier had a double-double in the first half alone.

The Seahawks used a series of runs in the second half to trim Gordon's lead to a mere two points by the midway point of the period. David Hanson was a major part of the comeback attempt. The senior transfer was held scoreless on the first half, but broke out with 16 in the second and Salve was able to eventually tie the game at 55.

Gordon rebuilt a lead by as many as nine in the waning minutes, but a cold stretch over the final few moments allowed the Seahawks to creep back into the game. Salve made a lay up with 12 seconds with get back within a point. The Scots had several chances to ice the game, but could not convert to leave the game in the balance.

Salve missed an opportunity at the buzzer to win the game.

Duviver led all Gordon players with 19 points and 14 caroms. The rookie also had three assists and two blocks. Johnson had his seventh double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Jake Haar (Huntington Beach, Calif.) had 11 points off the bench for the second straight game.

Gordon currently sits a 6-6 overall and 3-2 in the CCC. The Scots look to jump back over .500 on the season when they play host to Curry on Saturday at 3 p.m.
