WENHAM, Mass.—A high-powered offensive attack sent Gordon to a big win over UNE on Homecoming Saturday on the Quad. The Fighting Scots scored twice in the first half and three times in the second to pitch a 5-0 victory against their Commonwealth Coast Conference opponents.
Gordon (7-1-1) kicked off its Homecoming party in style, controlling the pace from the opening whistle and causing issues in UNE's back end. Just seven minutes into the game,
Danny Nkhalamba (Concord, N.H.) found space along the right side, just outside of the 18-yard box. The speedy sophomore sent a low drive across the face of the goal, finding the head of a diving
Caleb Cole (Coatesville, Pa.) for the first score of the game.
The Fighting Scots continued to pepper the UNE goal, but Gordon was unable to strike gold for a second time until the 31
st minute. Cole stood alone with the ball in the middle of the field and took a few long touches unmarked before firing a shot from 35 yards from goal. The ball kept rising until it hit net just under the crossbar on the right side to give Gordon a 2-0 advantage.
Gordon held a 13-4 shot advantage in the first half, eight of which were on frame.
The Scots doubled up their score in a three-minute flurry in the early stages of the second half. The Nor'easters committed a foul on a break inside the box, leading to a penalty kick attempt for sophomore
Tyler Modzeleski (Cazenovia, N.Y.). The striker hit a firm ball to the right side to make it a 3-0 game. Just three minutes later, Nkhalamba gathered a ball from
Josh Beveridge (Anchorage, Alaska) outside of the 18-yard box and beat the keeper to his left on a loopy, curled attempt to the low corner.
Gordon's persistent buzzing on offense led to another chance with fewer than 13 minutes remaining in regulation. Nkhalamba hit a quick touch at the half-circle, as
Matt Chartier (Concord, N.H.) cut through at the 12-yard mark and beat two defenders to a spot. UNE goalkeeper Elijah Leverett (No. Yarmouth, Maine) tried to come off his post, but Chartier passed him as he came out for the fifth goal on Gordon's side.
UNE looked poised to end the shutout in the 86
th minute when Sam Farr (Portland, Maine) got loose behind the Gordon defense. However, Farr was forced to pull it back briefly and his shot hit
Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, Pa.) in the gut.
