Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Offensive Firepower Helps Scots Sink Vikings

WENHAM, Mass.—Saturday's offensive explosion carried into Tuesday afternoon as the Gordon Men's Soccer program put seven goals up on the scoreboard in a shutout victory over Salem State on the Gordon Quad. The Fighting Scots tacked on five goals before halftime and held down the fort for the team's fourth consecutive shutout.

The Fighting Scots improve to 8-1-1 on the season and have now won six straight games, five of which came in the shutout variety. The Vikings drop their third straight and dip to 2-4-3 on the year.

Gordon came up empty over the first 20 minutes of play despite pressuring the Vikings' back end from the very first minute. A couple of close calls ended up in Salem State's favor until the 23rd minute. Sophomore defender Collin Surface (Talmadge, Ohio) carried the ball down the left side and sent in a low cross. The pass missed several players until it hit the right foot of freshman Michael Cuocci (Baltimore, Md.), who struck the ball past the keeper to the left side for his first collegiate goal.

The Fighting Scots did not waste any time putting a second point on the scoreboard as Matt Chartier (Concord, N.H.) found Caleb Cole (Coatesville, Pa.) on a thru ball in tight quarters. Some nifty footwork and a little chip gave Gordon a 2-0 advantage just 45 seconds after scoring its first.

A busy few minutes continued in the 26th minute when Tyler Modzeleski (Cazenovia, N.Y.) put a strong attempt on net after receiving a ball from Cuocci. Gordon capped off a five-minute scoring stretch with its fourth goal of the span when Josh Cochran (Bellville, Ohio) headed in a 40-yard free kick from Cole.

Sammy Wilson (Ansonia, Conn.) added a fifth Gordon goal in the 38th minute, heading in a corner kick rebound from Cole and Mark Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio).

Cole made it a 6-0 game five minutes into the second half on a tipped pass from Nick Falstoe (Bethel, Conn.). Cuocci added his second of the day, sending an easy ball past the keeper on a feed from Chartier.

Gordon outshot the Vikings 26-6 for the game and held a firm 13-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, Pa.) made three saves for his fifth shutout of the season, while the Vikings combined to stop seven shots. Cole now has a point in eight straight games, putting up a season-high six in the win.

The Fighting Scots are back on the pitch on Saturday when they head to Quincy, Mass. To take on Eastern Nazarene for an 8 p.m. tip.
