Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Risma Passes Milestone in Senior Night Celebration

WENHAM, Mass.—Senior Maggie Risma (Hudson, Ohio) passed the 2,000 career digs mark early in the third set of a 25-17, 25-14, 25-14 victory for the Fighting Scots on Senior Night. Gordon looked smooth all night, snapping a five-game skid by beating Eastern Nazarene in three sets.

The Fighting Scots received a much-needed home win as they approach the end of the regular season, improving to 12-13 and 5-3 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. Eastern Nazarene completes its conference schedule at 1-8, putting them outside of next week's tournament. The Lions currently sit at 5-17 overall.

Gordon never hit below .240 in any set and found plenty of success in both phases of the game. The Fighting Scots did not trail until early in the third set, leading by as many as 11 in the opener thanks to a pair of large runs. Eastern Nazarene managed to close the gap to six at a few points in the opening set, but Gordon was able to pull away for the 25-17 win.

The second set played out a bit evener at the start, with each team holding to nine points approaching the midpoint. The Fighting Scots were able to use a 13-3 run to break things open and they never looked back on their way to a 25-14 win.

The Lions took their first lead of the match at 2-1 in the third set, but a 5-1 run by the Fighting Scots put them in another hole and Gordon was able to get in a rhythm down the stretch to close things out in three.

Joanna Joseph (Brockton, Mass.) had a solid night for the Lions with eight kills a .154 hitting percentage. Lauryl Berger (Laurel, Del.) had 13 assists and libero Monica Ly (Quincy, Mass.) chipped in 13 digs.

Risma led the Scots with 16 digs, nine of them coming in the final set of play. Renee Cooprider (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Carleigh Petersen (North Hills, Calif.) both had 10 digs as well. Cooprider also set up 32 kills on the evening. Amanda Snyder (San Jose, Calif.) paced the offense with 12 kills to only two errors, while Petersen celebrated the senior festivities with 11 kills and a .296 hitting mark.

Gordon held a 5-1 edge in blocks and 41-17 advantage in kills.

Of Note:

  • Risma became the first Gordon player in recent history to pass the 2,000-dig mark, early in the third set. She is one of 10 active players in all of Division III to reach this milestone.
