Scots, Bucs Share Spoils in Break Finale

WINTER HAVEN, Fla.—Senior pitcher Scott Hall (Weymouth, Mass.) went seven innings strong for the second time in a week to help Gordon bounce back for a split with Beloit on Friday afternoon. After struggling in a game one loss to the Buccaneers, Gordon bounced back for a 6-1 victory to close their trip at 5-5.

Beloit won the morning contest 12-2 and went to 4-3 this season. The Bucs end their southern swing on Saturday with a game against Iowa Wesleyan University. Gordon is back in action next Thursday with a game in Northborough against WPI.

Game One: Beloit 12 – 2 Gordon

Jeremy Jackson (Waco, Texas) provided Gordon with much of its offense on the day and the left fielder opened the game with an RBI double to left to score Dean Demers (Sandy Hook, Conn.).

Gordon's lead would be short lived as the Bucs erupted for six runs in the top of the second inning. The first six Bucs reached base safely, only of which came on hits and Beloit put four runs on the board quickly. Two more RBI knocks came later in the frame with two outs. Joey Casa (Chicago, Ill.) delivered the biggest blow of the inning with a two-RBI double.

The Scots were never able to recover any type of momentum to scratch their way back into the game. Beloit added five more runs between the third and fourth innings, including a homer to deep left by junior Kam Sallee (Huntley, Ill.).

Jackson would deliver another RBI hit in the sixth inning, but Gordon would fall 12-2 to the Bucs. The senior outfielder provided a 3-for-3 game one.

Beloit's Austin Padjen (Crystal Lake, Ill.) won his second game of the year, holding Gordon to five hits and two earned runs.

Game Two: Gordon 6 – 1 Beloit

The tale of two games was apparent in the nightcap as the Scots sent Hall to the mound to wrap up the series. Hall pitched a one-hitter on Sunday and earned himself on D3Baseball.com's Team of the Week for his efforts.

Beloit was able to make more contact on the Gordon senior on Friday, but Hall consistently worked himself out of any trouble.

With Hall humming in the early going, Gordon was able to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Addison Tarr (Oxnard, Calif.) brought in the first run of the game on a lofty sacrifice fly to right field to easily score Christian Hodge (Waltham, Mass.) from third. Jackson continued his strong day in the same inning with another RBI double to right-center to bring in Alex Smith (Wethersfield, Conn.).

Beloit got one back in the fourth inning on a fielder's choice in the fourth to cut Gordon's lead to one run, but Hall would not sacrifice another score for the remainder.

The Scots added a run in the fifth inning on another RBI by Jackson, but Beloit threatened to make things interesting in the bottom of the sixth. The Bucs put runners on first and second with no outs on a pair of singles, but Hall received a lineout to Smith, who was able to double up the runner at second. The Scot pitcher then used a slick pickoff move to get the runner on first in a run down just one play later to get out of the jam.

Gordon tacked on some insurance runs in the seventh with Jackson's third RBI of the game. Matt Moffat (Stratford, Conn.) scored a run on a sacrifice bunt up the first base line and Ryan Paulsen (Latham, N.Y.) put another on the board for good measure for a 6-1 lead.

Hall pitched to a 1-2-3 inning the seventh, including a game-ending strikeout looking. Beloit's Jamie Huntley (Woodstock, Ill.) was credited with the loss, his first.

Quick Hits
  • Gordon won five games in Florida for the second time in three seasons
  • Jackson took home the lead in hits, doubles, average and RBI after trailing Demers for most of the week. The outfielder already has more hits and RBI than he had in all of the 2015 season.
  • Gordon's current pace would have them shattering the program's season runs record, which stands at 205.
  • Hall is one win away from tying Gordon's all-time wins record set by Wes Arning '15.
