Steaming Offense Beats Engineers on the Road

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass.—Senior Alex Smith (Wethersfield, Conn.) led Gordon to an impressive 7-6 win over WPI on Thursday afternoon. The shortstop went 4-for-5 at the dish with a home run and knocked in the game-winning score in the sixth inning to send the Scots to a 6-5 record. The Engineers had a five-game win streak snapped and fall to 7-5.

Smith got the scoring started in the top of the first inning when he launched a two-out pitch over the fence in centerfield. Jeremy Jackson (Waco, Texas) kept the rally alive with a single and took third when a Christian Hodge (Waltham, Mass.) single found the hole between first and second. Jackson scored Gordon's second run of the inning on a passed ball.

A pair of base hits by the Engineers put a run on the board to make it a 2-1 game, but Gordon came back with four more in the second to give themselves a comfortable lead. Freshmen Erik Holvik (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) and Chris Leavitt (Bridgewater, Mass.) each earned hits with one out and Holvik scored on a sacrifice fly to deep left.

After a walk by Matt Moffat (Stratford, Conn.), Smith and Jackson each singled to score two more runs. Smith eventually scored on a well-executed double steal to make it a 6-1 game.

Scott Hall (Weymouth, Mass.) entered the day with two complete games and only one run allowed, but the Engineers were able to tag the tall righty in the second and third innings.  DJ Ouellette (Watertown, Conn.) hit a solo shot in the second to make it a four-run game before the Engineers added three more in the third.

Hall ushered an uncharacteristic three walks in the bottom of the third and the Engineers added two hits by Alex Venditti (Newton, Mass.) and Ouelette to cut Gordon's lead down to one.

WPI's Nick Comei (Haverhill, Mass.) drove in the tying run on a sacrifice fly to right field, effectively knocking Hall out of the game after four innings.

Matt Amore (Pequannock, N.J.) came into the game in the bottom of the fifth and held the WPI offense two only two hits, while striking out eight.

Smith delivered what would end up as the game-winning knock in the top of the sixth inning when he laced a two-out double that bounced over the wall, scoring Addison Tarr (Oxnard, Calif.) from second base.

Amore held on down the stretch, including pitching himself out of a jam in the eighth inning and striking out the side in the ninth.

For the Engineers
  • Oueltte, Comei and Evan Lacroix (Methuen, Mass.) each contributed two hits for WPI. Ouelette drove in half of the runs for the Engineers.
  • Sam Bacchaocchi (Freetown, Mass.) was credited for the loss despite giving up only one run. Gordon chased Mike Duclos (Greenfield, Mass.) after 1.2 innings once the junior had given up six runs—five earned.

For the Scots
  • Smith finished just shy of tying the single-game hits record with four in the contest.
  • Jackson extended his hit streak to seven games and has recorded at least two hits in eight of Gordon's 11 games this season.
  • Hodge and Ryan Paulsen (Latham, N.Y.) both finished with three hits on the afternoon to raise their averages.
  • Gordon hit safely a season-high 17 times, breaking their previous high of 15 in a win against Clark. The Scots also broke a season-high with seven doubles in the game.
