Scots Blank Bears in Home Opener

WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Baseball ran its win streak to three with a shutout of visiting Bridgewater State on Wednesday afternoon. Senior starter Scott Hall (Weymouth, Mass.) finished off his third complete game of the season to help the Scots defeat the Bears 6-0 in the home opener at J. Tec White Field.

The Fighting Scots improve to 7-5 this season, while the Bears draw even to 6-6.

Both teams put runners on base in the first frame only to have each respective catcher throw a potential base thief out a second. Gordon was able to keep Bridgewater State off the board in the second inning as well despite the first two Bears reaching base safely. After Hall earned a strikeout, Gordon turned an unconventional double play to get out of the jam unscathed.

Gordon put two runs on board in the bottom half of the second with Jeremy Jackson (Waco, Texas) getting things started with a inning-opening walk. The left fielder was advanced on a sacrifice bunt and went to third on a wild pitch to threaten for the first run. Freshman Chris Leavitt (Bridgewater, Mass.) walked with one out to set up back-to-back RBI singles by Ryan Paulsen (Latham, N.Y.) and Chris Leavitt (Waltham, Mass.), putting Gordon up 2-0.

The Scots tacked on another run in the sixth inning by playing some small ball. Paulsen led off the inning with a single and eventually scored thanks to two sacrifice bunts by Hodge and Daniel Quint (Wells, Maine).

Gordon took full control in the seventh inning by building up a 6-0 advantage. The Scots struck for four hits in the inning, including a two-RBI single by Hodge with two outs.

Hall was in control for much of the day, never allowing more than two Bears on base in any inning. The Gordon starter was also the beneficiary of three double plays on the day.

For the Bears
  • Leadoff hitter Ryan Feeney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) totaled three of Bridgewater's eight hits, including their only extra-base hit.
  • Reed Pike (Bellingham, Mass.) and Brandon Hoyle (Bridgewater, Mass.) combined for four hits.
  • Junior Samuel Devine (Bourne, Mass.) went almost seven innings and was credited with the loss despite striking out seven Gordon batters.

For the Scots
  • Hall's complete game victory put him in a tie for most career victories in the program with Wes Arning '15, who was on hand to catch the game on Wednesday. Hall now sits at 12 career wins.
  • Five of Gordon's nine starters finished with multiple hits in the game.
  • Paulsen continued his hot stretch with a 3-for-4 effort.
  • Hodge was credited with three of Gordon's six RBI on the day, his first since putting two on the board in a doubleheader with Anna Maria in Florida.

On Deck
  • Gordon is tentatively scheduled to host Mass Maritime tomorrow at 3:30, depending on weather. Bridgewater hopes to meet up with Wheaton (Mass.) at 3:30 on Thursday.
