CAMBRIDGE, Mass. —A late spurt by MIT's offense allowed the Engineers to pull away from Gordon Men's Lacrosse in a 17-10 game on St. Patrick's Day. Gordon made it a three-goal game in the final 10 minutes after falling behind early, but the undefeated Engineers did just enough to keep Gordon winless on the season.
MIT sophomore Mitch Turley (Westfield, Ind.) opened the scoring with back-to-back goals midway through the first quarter as senior
Roger Evans (Oxford, Pa.) put Gordon on the board in a span of one minute. Davis and
Jake Martin (Watertown, Conn.) both found the back of the net late in the frame but senior Jonah Hessels (Laytonsville, Md.) increased the Engineers' lead to 4-2 with two ticks left.
The second stanza was a scoreless affair until the 6:19 mark when Turley completed the hat trick, which was followed by a solo strike from Paul Orrson (Baltimore, Md.) 33 seconds later. The Fighting Scots won the ensuing faceoff and immediately went to the cage as freshman
Austin Early (Palmyra, Va.) connected on a pass from Martin. The visitors generated another quick score as Evans cut the deficit in half (6-4) with 5:04 on the clock. MIT replied by going on a 4-1 run to end the quarter with junior Michael Traub (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) providing two goals and an assist on a Davis blast with five seconds remaining.
The Engineers increased their advantage to 11-5 just over four minutes into the third quarter courtesy of a goal by freshman Jake Stein (Vienna, Va.) that was set up by junior Harris Stolzenberg (Weston, Fla.). Gordon countered with a 3-1 spurt that narrowed the gap to 12-8 at the end of the period. Sophomore
Nico Manganiello (Peabody, Mass.) was a factor in all three goals as he registered back-to-back goals in addition to setting up Martin for a man-up strike with 12 seconds to go.
Stein once again provided the first goal for MIT as he scored after 1:12 expired in the final frame. The Fighting Scots countered with markers from Early and Evans, coming within 13-10 with 8:26 left to play. This was as close as it would get as a blast from Hessels kicked off the Engineers' game-ending run.
Turley finished with four goals and four groundballs while Stolzenberg posted three assists and three groundballs. Traub notched two goals and an assist as sophomore Christian Jamison (Huntington, N.Y.) collected four groundballs. Freshman Mitchell Galer (Westlake Village, Calif.) was 16-of-30 in faceoffs and amassed nine groundballs while senior goalie Eric Bartell (San Diego, Calif.) tallied 11 saves.
Evans recorded a hat trick to go along with four groundballs as Manganiello contributed two goals and an assist. Senior
Peter Kovacevic (Pittsburgh, Pa.) won 14 of his 27 faceoffs and scooped up seven groundballs while junior
William Brown (Uxbridge, Mass.) and sophomore
Ricardo Coffre (Tarrytown, N.Y.) both generated three groundballs. In net, senior
Cody Greenwald (Albany, N.Y.) racked up 16 saves.
Both squads are back in action on Wednesday, March 23 with MIT traveling to Lynn University and Gordon visiting Wheaton College.
