Lyons Top Fighting Scots 10-4

NORTON, Mass. – A Gordon scoring outage in the first half allowed Wheaton (Mass.) to build up a six-goal lead on its way to a 10-4 win on Wednesday at Nordin Field. The Fighting Scots drop to 0-7, while Wheaton improves to 3-3.

The Lyons got the scoring started with three goals in the opening 15 minutes with the first goal came from junior Will Morrison (Osterville, Mass.) when he received a sharp pass from first-year CJ Leighton (Falmouth, Maine) to get the early 1-0 lead. Junior Kyle Neale (Brooklyn, N.Y.) maintained the momentum for Wheaton when he netted his own goal at 10:16. Less than a minute later, junior Devin Higgins found his opportunity to knock in a goal at 9:27 to bring Wheaton ahead by three.

Gordon was unable on any of its 13 first-half shots as all five attempts on goal were saved by Ryan Clair (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.).

Wheaton scored only once in the second quarter, but it was enough to hold a 4-0 lead at the halftime break.

In the third quarter, first-year Connor Donaghy (Holtsville, N.Y.) registered another goal for the Lyons. Sophomore Scott Whear (Duxbury, Mass.) carried Wheaton to a 6-0 lead when he tallied his first goal of the game at 13:03.

The Fighting Scots received their opportunity to get on the board when senior Roger Evans (Oxford, Pa.) collected a goal at 7:54 to chip away at Wheaton's lead.

However, Wheaton would add two more at the end of the third to make it an 8-1 game entering the final period.

Gordon outscored the Lyons 3-2 in the four quarter, but could not creep closer than five goals.

Senior goalkeeper Ryan Clair (3-3) recorded the win for Wheaton with 10 saves in his 59 minutes played. Cody Greenwald (Albany, N.Y.) made nine saves in the loss.

Evans recorded a hat trick in the loss.
