AUBURNDALE, Fla.—Senior starter
Scott Hall (Weymouth, Mass.) struck out 13 batters in game two of a doubleheader with Anna Maria to help Gordon Baseball complete a sweep of the Amcats 10-5 and 4-0. The Fighting Scots showed they could win games in different ways, powering their way to 10 runs in the first game before Hall worked a one-hitter in game two at the Lake Myrtle Sports Park on Sunday.
Anna Maria drops to 0-4 this season after being swept by Medialle on Saturday afternoon. Gordon improves to 3-1 through two days in Florida and has a day off on Monday to rest of up for a tough doubleheader against Gwynedd-Mercy on Tuesday afternoon.
Game One It was the Amcats who jumped on the scoreboard first in the morning game as James Marcello led off the contest with a single over the head of the first baseman. The speedy shortstop stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch to put Anna Maria in scoring position quickly.
Senior Matthew Leahey (Rutland, Mass.) brought his teammate home two plays late with a double to the wall in left center. Leahey scored with two outs in the frame when Tanner Jakola (Leominster, Mass.) put a ball up the middle for the 2-0 lead.
Gordon struck back in the bottom half with
Addison Tarr (Oxnard, Calif.) staying hot in the leadoff hole. Tarr singled down the right-field line and stole second immediately to threaten the Amcats defense. The Scots loaded the bases later in the inning and
Matt Moffat (Stratford, Conn.) walked to drive in Gordon's first run. With the bases still loaded and only one out,
Travis Benoit (Worcester, Mass.) tied the game with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Alex Smith (Wethersfield, Conn.) put the Scots on top for good in the bottom of the second when he laced a pitch that tailed directly into the left-field foul pole for a home run, scoring Tarr.
Dean Demers (Sandy Hook, Conn.) doubled directly after and eventually scored on a single by Moffat to increase Gordon's lead to 5-2.
The Fighting Scots scored four more in the third to break the game open, beginning with rookie
Christian Hodge's (Waltham, Mass.) first career dinger. A couple of Anna Maria miscues allowed Gordon to score three more times in the frame, two of them coming off the bat of
Jeremy Jackson (Waco, Texas).
Anna Maria scored twice in the fourth, again with Leahey leading the charge, but Gordon was never threatened the rest of the way in the 10-5 win.
Game Two Game one gave way to a low-scoring affair with both pitchers going the length of the seven-inning contest.
Errors plagued the Amcats in the second game, as only two of Gordon's four runs ended up as earned. An error in the second extended the Scots offensive inning and Hodge obliged with a double to the opposite field to score
Chris Leavitt (Bridgewater, Mass.).
An inning later, Demers powered his way to a second triple in as many days to score Tarr easily. Tarr was a part of the other two scoring plays in the game as well, singling in a run in the fifth before scoring on a throwing error later in the frame.
Hall kept the Amcats from generating any consistent offense, striking out a career-high 13 batters and walking none. Only three Anna Maria batters reached base on the day, two coming off of strike threes in the dirt. Hall allowed one hit to third baseman Nate Gray (Kingston, N.Y.).
For the Amcats- Leahey and Gray led all Anna Maria players with two hits and two RBI each.
- Marcello got on base all four teams he entered the batters box in game one, hitting a single and earning three walks.
- Jakola started the day at DH and had one hit in the first game. The sophomore pitched well in game two, going the full game while giving up only two earned runs and striking out four.
For the Scots- Tarr led Gordon with five more hits on Sunday, including being the only Gordon hitter with a multi-hit game against Jakola. The sophomore scored all five times he got on base and stole three bases on the day.
- Eight Gordon players had at least one RBI between the two games.
- Connor Rogotzke (Altmont, N.Y.) registered his first career win in game one.
- The 13 strikeouts is the most by a Gordon pitcher since Steve Kefalas '10 struck out 12 batters during the 2010 season.
