Scots Overpower Vikings in Season Opener

SALEM, Mass.—Freshman Kieran Thompson (Berwyn, Pa.) scored twice as Gordon Field Hockey hammered home an impressive 5-1 victory at Salem State in the season opener for both programs.

The Fighting Scots (1-0) controlled the tempo early as they got fired off seven shots in their time of possession. Vikings' goalie Carolyn Woodin (Arlington, Mass.) was kept busy by Gordon's pressure as she made six saves in the half. Gordon finally got something to show for their dominance in the offensive end as Mackenzie Gray (Carver, Mass.) beat Woodin to give the Scot's a 1-0 lead with just under five minutes remaining in the half. Gordon's defense was stout as well, keeping Salem State scoreless by not allowing any shots on net.

The Vikings couldn't match the Fighting Scots pace on offense as they were outshot 13-4 in the second half. Gordon College added on to their lead as Emily Allcroft (Haydenville, Mass.) struck the back of the net two minutes into the second half on an assist from Alyssa Doucett (Barrington, N.H.).

Courtney Smith (Peabody, Mass.) retaliated for the Vikings as she weaved her way to the front of the net to tap in Salem State's first goal of the contest to cut the deficit to 2-1.

However, the Fighting Scots didn't take their foot off the pedal after their lead was trimmed to one as they put away two quick goals in two-minute span. Thompson tallied goal number one on an assist from Gray that enhanced Gordon's lead to 3-1. Moments later, the Scots gained some insurance when Allcroft found Sabrina Jandreau (Winslow, Maine) in scoring position outside the crease.  Ahead 4-1, Thompson tacked on one more goal for insurance in the waning minutes of play.

Despite the loss, Woodin made a solid 14 saves for the Vikings while Fighting Scots' goalie Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) stopped two shots.

Salem State will return to the field on September 7th when they host Little East Conference opponent Western Connecticut State for a start time of 3:00 p.m. at Alumni Field. Gordon will travel to Maine to take on Husson on Saturday at 2 p.m.
