BANGOR, Maine – Husson used a hat-trick from Lauren Russell and a 3-0 halftime lead to hold off visiting Gordon by the score of 4-3 in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday afternoon on the brand new turf of the Winkin Sports Complex. The Fighting Scots made a furious rally over the final 35 minutes, but a slow first half plagued them in their first loss of the season.
Russell gave Husson (1-1) the lead one minute and 29 seconds into game with an unassisted goal before scoring her second in the 11th minute with an assist from Mikayla Toth.
The Eagles entered the intermission with a 3-0 lead after Libby Kain found the back of net on a nice pass from Toth at the 19:36 mark.
Gordon cut into Husson's lead coming out of the halftime when Sabrina Jandreau (Winslow, Maine) finished off a feed through the crease from Mackenzie Gray (Carver, Mass.). Nearly 25 minutes passed before another score went up on the scoreboard, but it was Gray who created another chance for the Fighting Scots. The rookie midfielder flung a pass that found the stick of Emily Allcroft (Haydenville, Mass.) to bring Gordon within a goal.
Russell put the contest out of reach with her third goal of the game one minute and 13 seconds after Allcroft chopped the margin to one.
Allcroft added an unassisted strike as time dwindled on the clock and Gordon was unable to find some magic at the end to send the game to overtime.
Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) registered nine saves in the lost. Kaitlin Dolloff made two saves to pick up her first win on the season.
The Eagles outshot the Fighting Scots 18-6 and took the advantage in penalty corners, 7-5.
Husson will host the ninth ranked team in the nation when Wellesley visits tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. in non-conference action at Winkin Sports Complex. Gordon returns to action on September 7 when they host MIT for a 6:00 p.m. non-conference game.
