WENHAM, Mass.—Two rebound goals sent Western New England to a 2-0 win over Gordon in Commonwealth Coast Conference field hockey action on Tuesday night at the Brigham Athletic Complex. The Golden Bears scored on goal in each half to send the Fighting Scots to 0-2 in the CCC and 3-4 overall. Western New England pulls even at 1-1 in conference and 3-3 in total.
The Golden Bears showed a relentless offensive attack, especially in the second half when WNE pressured the Scots for insurance goal chances. After a short lull period to start the game, Western New England blitzed the Scots during a five-minute span that yielded three shots and two penalty corners. Abigail Seay (Marblehead, Mass.) kept the Golden Bears out of the net with a defensive save in the ninth minute off a nice shot by Brittany DeLima (Branchville, N.J.).
Gordon got its lone chance of the half in the 20th minute when Mackenzie Gray (Carver, Mass.) got loose inside the circle, but Grace Trupe (Cardiff, Calif.) knocked the ball away before it reached the goal line.
The Golden Bears finally broke the scoreless tie in the 30th minute when Emily Antinozzi (Rye, N.Y.) knocked in a rebound off a shot from Madison Barron (Lebanon, Pa.). It was Antinozzi's seventh of the season, which leads the team.
Western New England extended its lead in the 46th minute off of a penalty corner. Jacqueline Clark (Auburn, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal, finishing off a feed from DeLima as goalkeeper Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) approached.
Gordon could not manage a shot after the 44th minute of play as Western New England continued to keep the ball in its offensive end. The Golden Bears held a 13-3 shot advantage for the game.
Hicks made four stops for the Scots, while Trupe stopped a pair.
Gordon will look to rebound on Saturday with a rivalry matchup at Endicott at noon.
