WENHAM, Mass.—The Nor'easters of UNE rolled out of the North Shore with a 4-0 win over Gordon in Commonwealth Coast Conference field hockey play on Wednesday at the Brigham Athletic Complex. UNE scored twice in each half, while keeping the Scots' offense at bay to register its fourth straight CCC win to begin the slate.
Gordon dips to 3-6 on the season and remains winless in the conference at 0-4. The vaunted Nor'easters continued their tear through the league, where they have outscored opponents 18-1 in four games. UNE is 8-1 overall, with its lone loss coming to second-ranked Bowdoin.
The Nor'easters offense was steady from the start, registering two shots on goal less than a minute into regulation. Gordon defender Briana Kowolenko (Brooklyn, Conn.) came up big on both shots with defensive saves. Goalkeeper Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) was also busy with four saves in the first 10 minutes of the first half, including a pair of sprawling stops.
Gordon showed signs of being able to get out front of the ball and possess deep into UNE territory, especially in transition. Caroline Conte (Amesbury, Mass.) got a good look at net in the 7th minute, but Holly Smith (Peabody, Mass.) kicked it away.
UNE owned much of the next 16 minutes. The Nor'easters constant pressure eventually led to a score in the 15th minute when Nicole Matarozzo (Wolfeboro, N.H.) split two Gordon defenders and laced a shot past the stick of Hicks.
The Nor'easters added another one before the halftime buzzer, as Becky Zakorchemny (Gilford, N.H.) poked through a Hannah Buckley (Leominster, Mass.) pass.
Gordon had a flurry of activity on the offensive end right before the end of the half, but a defensive save by Kersey Boulay (Liberty, Maine) kept the home team off the scoreboard.
UNE added two quick goals in the middle of the second half to put things on ice. Matarozzo knocked in her second goal of the day and eighth of the year in the 52nd minute with Abbey Rouillard (Claremont, N.H.) on the assisting effort. Brooke Marshall (Bow, N.H.) finished off pass from Marge Gardiner (East Northport, N.Y.) on a perfectly executed penalty corner play to complete the scoring.
Hicks made 10 stops in between the pipes for the Scots, while Smith made five. The Nor'easters held a 9-4 advantage in penalty corners.
Gordon will look to break a four-game skid when they travel to Dudley on Friday to take on Nichols, who is also winless in the conference.
