Scots Take Care of Lynx at Home

WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon's winning ways continued on Thursday night at the Bennett Athletic Center as the Fighting Scots took down visiting Lesley in three sets. Gordon won for the sixth time in seven matches and improved to 4-1 at home this season.

The Fighting Scots improve to 9-7 overall in 2016, rebounding nicely after the 3-6 start to begin the season. Lesley falls to 2-9 overall and has now dropped seven consecutive matches.

Neither team was able to find much consistency in the opening set as both hit for a match low in a 25-18 set win for the home team.

Gordon looked more comfortable from start to finish in the second set, racing out to a 9-3 lead before the Lynx could blink. Two timeouts taken by the away team could not slow down the Scots as they eventually built up a 16-7 advantage before Lesley tried to fight its way back. The Lynx were able to close the gap to five points at 17-12, but Gordon ended the set on an 8-3 run to take a two-game advantage entering the third.

The Fighting Scots looked poised to run away with the third set, scoring the first six points of the stanza. However, a 7-0 in the middle of the game, spurred on by the play of Kaylee Deluga (Dennis, Mass.) and Vera Bednar (Helmond, Netherlands). Gordon eventually refocused, taking the lead back at 15-14 and never trailed again en route to a 25-19 clincher.

For the Lynx:
  • Deluga was a force up front with a match-high 11 kills and a .259 hitting percentage from the middle. She also added 11 digs and a pair of solo blocks.
  • Bednar set up 19 kills.
  • Jess Reynolds (Londonderry, N.H.) dug up a team high 19 balls.
For the Scots:
  • Strong closes by Megan Hokanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Jamie Tafoya (Fort Collins, Colo.) gave them a share of the team lead in kills with eight apiece, while both hitting for high marks.
  • Mackenzie Hinds (Higganum, Conn.) also had a strong day on offense with seven kills and a .357 percentage.
  • Renee Cooprider (Hopkinton, Mass.) contributed to the effort with 27 assists and two nifty kills.
  • Maggie Risma (Hudson, Ohio) reprised her role at libero and took the team lead with 17 digs. She also led the Scots with four service aces.
