WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Gordon traveled to take on Rivier and St. Joseph in non-conference play. They defeated Rivier 3-0 and St. Joseph 3-1.
In the first match, the Fighting Scots (15-10) won the first set 25-18 as they recorded 12 kills and held the Raiders (17-10) to a -0.77 hitting percentage. Gordon started the set on a 13-5 run. They scored nine out of the next 19 to take a 22-15 lead. Rivier cut the lead to five by scoring three out of the next four before the Fighting Scots closed out the set by forcing two errors.
Gordon won the second set 25-23 as they tallied 16 kills and a .400 hitting percentage. They started the set with a 10-7 run. They stretched their lead out to five by scoring eight out of the next 13 points to lead 18-13. The Raiders scored three points in a row to cut the lead to two points. Gordon responded by scoring five out of the next eight points to make it a 23-19 set. Rivier then scored three in a row to cut the deficit to one. The Fighting Scots closed out the set by forcing a service error and with a kill by
Mackenzie Hinds.
In the third set, Gordon recorded 13 kills and a .200 hitting percentage. The teams traded points back and forth to start the set until they were tied at 8-8. The Fighting Scots scored 13 out of the next 22 to take a 21-17 lead. The Raiders scored four out of the next five to cut the deficit to one. Gordon closed out the set and the match by scoring three in a row on two attack errors by Rivier and a kill by
Jamie Tafoya.
Hinds recorded 13 kills and five digs.
Sophia Scola had eight digs and seven kills.
Ashlyn Gergins recorded 31 assists and seven digs.
Jenny Curtiss led the team in digs with 20.
In the second match, Gordon won the first set 25-16 as they posted a .292 hitting percentage. The teams traded points most of the set before Gordon took 14-11 lead. They scored 11 out of the next 16 points to take the set from the Blue Jays (4-19).
St. Joseph won the second set 25-23 and posted a .292 hitting percentage and ten kills. They started the set on a 7-2 run. The Fighting Scots cut the lead to one with a 13-9 run. The Blue Jaysscored eight out of the next 14 to take a 24-21 lead and force set point. Gordon scored two straight on an attack error by St. Joseph and a kill by Hinds before committing a service error to end the set.
The Fighting Scots won the third set 25-23 as they tallied 12 kills. The teams traded points for much of the set until Gordon took an 18-17 lead. The Blue Jaysthen scored four in a row to take a three-point lead. The Fighting Scots outscored them 7-2 the rest of the way to win the set.
Gordon went off on a 6-0 run to start the fourth set. St. Joseph responded by scoring six in a row themselves to tie the set at 6-6. The teams traded five-point runs to tie the set again at 12-12. The Fighting Scots outscored them 13-6 the rest of the way to take the set and the match.
Hinds posted a double-double as she had a career-high 24 kills and 11 digs.
Jacque Fitzgerald also recorded career-highs in kills with nine and in digs with five. Scola had eight kills and a career-best five aces.
Gordon next travels to take on CCC foe University of New England Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.
