WENHAM, Mass. — Gordon hosted Western New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference action and put two of its three shots on goal past the keeper in its 2-0 win.
The Fighting Scots (11-5-1, 6-2-1 CCC) got on the board in the eighth minute as
Josh Beveridge took a pass from
Matt Chartier and beat the keeper from six yards out. They put defensive pressure on the Golden Bears (11-6-1, 6-2-1 CCC)Â as only two of their six shots in the half were on goal with one being saved by
Wesley Sprague and the other one being saved by a Gordon defender.
In the second half, Western New England had a couple of scoring opportunities. Logan Pingree's shot in the 58
th minute was saved by Sprague. Kory Caster's header in the 66
th minute went high above the net while Nick Liccardi's shot in the 69
th minute was just a little off as it hit off the post.
David Cochran added a goal in the 81
st minute to stretch the lead to two goals. The Golden Bears had two opportunities to score, but Josh Loomis' shot in the 84
th minute was stopped by Sprague and Troy Remilliard's shot with 16 seconds left was saved by Sprague to seal the shutout and the win.
Sprague now has eight shutouts on the season, which is five more than the next CCC goalie and includes four shutouts in CCC play. He also leads the CCC in saves with 71. Beveridge has now tied his career-high in goals in a season with three this year.
The Fighting Scots next host Nichols in the quarterfinals of the CCC tournament Oct. 28 as they are the No. 2 seed. The game time will be determined later in the week.
