Scots Stumped by Sewanee 11-6

Box Score

SEWANEE, Tenn.—Scoring droughts in the first and second halves ultimately doomed women's lacrosse in its first game of its spring break trip against host Sewanee. The Fighting Scots scored the first three goals of the game, but were outscored 11-3 the rest of the way in an 11-6 loss to the Tigers.

Olivia McCarrick (Glen Burnie, Md.) opened the scoring with an unassisted strike just 45 seconds into regulation. Senior Caroline Walton (Irvine, Calif.) sent home a pass over the middle from MC Aston (Greenwich, N.Y.) to make it 2-0 just a minute later before McCarrick took a ball in herself again to complete three goals in under four minutes for Gordon.

From there, Gordon's offense went on its longest streak without scoring of the season. The Tigers looked overmatched early on, but quickly found their footing on their way to a 7-0 run that lasted a full 20 minutes of game time. By the time Hannah Bourk (Barrington, R.I.) scored with 26 seconds to go until halftime, Gordon was staring at a multi-goal deficit.

A quieter second half unfolded, but Gordon sprung hope of a comeback. The Fighting Scots held the Tigers scoreless for nearly 20 minutes in the stanza, while Walton and Bourk added their second goals of the game to make it a 7-6 game in favor of the home side.

However, just a minute after Bourk punched in a goal with 12:35 to go in regulation, Sewanee's Preston Cooper sparked a run of four goals in four minutes for the Tigers to put away the Scots for good.

Gordon's six goals was a season low fresh off its season-best 14 goals in a win against Worcester State on Thursday. The mark was its lowest output since an 11-5 loss to Roger Williams in the middle of last season.

Melanie Dwyer (Reading, Mass.) and Anastasia Landman (Cheswick, Pa.) split time in net, but Dwyer was tagged with the loss after allowing seven goals in the first half. The two combined to make seven saves.

Sewanee's Brianna Young saved seven of the 13 shots she saw on the day to earn her sixth win of the season.

Molly Elkins led all scorers with three goals for the Tigers, while five other Sewanee players contributed at least one goal.

The Fighting Scots (3-2) will look to get back in the swing of things with a neutral-site game against Goucher on Thursday.
