Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn.—A spring break trip for Gordon Women's Lacrosse came to a disappointing end with a 12-11 loss to Goucher on Thursday afternoon. The Fighting Scots hoped to salvage a win after a loss to Sewanee on Tuesday, but gave up the game-winner with three minutes left to drop to 3-3 on the season.
Much like they did on Tuesday night, Gordon jumped out to a 3-0 lead before its opponents knew what hit them.
Anna Rourke (Hamilton, Mass.),
MC Aston (Greenwich, N.Y.) and
Olivia McCarrick (Glen Burnie, Md.) all scored in a two-minute span to immediately take control.
Perhaps flashbacks of Tuesday night crept back because the Gophers stormed right back with a 4-0 run of its own that lasted five minutes. The Fighting Scots had given up a 7-0 run to Sewanee on Tuesday after grabbing the three-goal lead, but did not fall into a lull this time around. McCarrick tied the game at four with her second unassisted goal of the game before
Paige Thompson (West Chester, Pa.) put Gordon back on top by finishing a pass from Rourke with 16 minutes to go until halftime.
The back-and-forth game continued until the Gophers scored the final two goals of the half to take a 7-6 lead. Goucher's scoring punch came as a surprise as they had no totaled more than five goals in an entire game in seven games previous.
The Gophers continued their second four-goal run of the game into the second half to take a 9-6 lead with 25 minutes to go in regulation, only to see the Fighting Scots roar back with four goals in eight minutes to make it a 10-10 game.
From there both offenses went nearly silent. Goucher's Shannon Stull put them up 11-10 with 13 minutes left, but Rourke drew Gordon even once again with a nice goal at the 53-minute mark.
The Fighting Scots had several opportunities to take a lead late, but turnovers bit the visitors on multiple occasions. Gordon committed a season-high 30 in the game, five more than the previous high.
Instead, Goucher took advantage of a man-up situation on a free-position shot when Stull fired home her sixth goal of the afternoon.
Gordon registered a season-high 31 shots, but could not turn on the jets down the stretch to come away with a confidence-boosting victory. McCarrick led the Scots with seven points—four goals and three assists on 12 shots.
The Fighting Scots also dominated the draw circle for the first time this season (18-7), but could not turn those opportunities into quick goals on the offensive end.
Gordon will look to rebound back in their home state when a home game against Lasell on Wednesday. The Scots are 2-0 at Brigham this spring compared to 1-3 away from it.
