WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Men's Tennis got the best of Colby-Sawyer for the second time during the 2016-17 season, 5-4. Facing a stiffer challenge from the lineup they saw in the fall, Gordon gutted out half of the singles matches after taking two of three in doubles to get by the Chargers.
Mason Casady (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Nate Lookwhy (Westborough, Mass.) continued their magic at the top of the doubles lineup with an impressive 8-3 win over Gustav Jigrup (Gotehnburg, Vastra Frolunda, Sweden) and Alex Wright (St. Austell, Cornwall, England). Jonathan Frink (La Crescenta, Calif.) and Peter Godwin (Manchester, Conn.) were not too far off with an 8-5 win at the bottom flight to make it a 2-0 score.
Colby-Sawyer took a much needed point back at second doubles where Ryan Sawyer (Edgartown, Mass.) and Dean Boodakian (Burlington, Mass.) outlasted Mike D'Antuono (Mapleville, R.I.) and Eric Kim (La Crescenta, Calif.), 9-7.
The Fighting Scots were able to get their points early in singles action to secure the win before the match was fully completed.
Frink was impressive at the third spot with a straight set win over Cass McCann (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada), 6-4, 6-3. High school teammate Kim was not far behind with a 6-2, 7-6 (3) win over Boodakian at the fifth flight to pull Gordon within a point of victory.
Wright enacted revenge on Lookwhy in singles with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph, but Gordon closed out the result just a few minutes later when Godwin downed Ryan Broderick (Londonderry, N.H.) 6-4, 6-2.
The Chargers picked up their final two points of the day at one and four, both in three-set thrillers. Jigrup overcame a match point to best Casady 10-6 in a super tiebreaker, while Sawyer took down D'Antuono in a topsy-turvy match at four.
Gordon improves to 12-4 on the season and continues a five-match win streak heading into a busy conference week. The Fighting Scots travel to Rhode Island to take on Salve Regina tomorrow before hosting Western New England on Wednesday.
Colby-Sawyer drops to 8-10 and returns to North Atlantic Conference action on Thursday with a home match against Green Mountain.
