Scots Stifle Lions with Résumé-Boosting Sweep

QUINCY, Mass.—Gordon Baseball kept its Commonwealth Coast Conference playoff hopes very alive with a sweep of Eastern Nazarene on Saturday at Adams Field. The Fighting Scots only gave up a pair of runs between the two contests in a 3-1 and 12-1 doubleheader sweep of the host Lions.
 
Entering yesterday's series with Roger Williams, Gordon needed to win at least three of their final four conference games to have a chance at the postseason. The Fighting Scots did their part by completing their first three-game win streak of the season and finishing the regular season at 6-10 in the CCC.
 
Gordon will have to await the results of Sunday's Curry-Wentworth series to see if they are included in the six-team field that begins next week.
 
Prior to the start of Saturday's doubleheader, the Eastern Nazarene College baseball program recognized its senior class. Ragan Cole (Alamogordo, N.M.), Joe Commesso (Marshfield, Mass.), Cameron Fiorentino (Uxbridge, Mass.), Benjamin Kefalis (Middleboro, Mass.), and Nick Story (Gilbert, Ariz.) were all honored before suiting up for the final time in a Lions uniform.
 
John Greenlee (San Marcos, Calif.) and Steven Pesce (Harrison, N.Y.) both registered one hit and drove in one RBI on the day. Kefalis finished with a base knock and one run scored.
 
In game one, Gordon held on for a 3-1 victory despite a late push by the home team.
 
The visitors plated two runs in the top of the second to grab a 2-0 lead. Travis Benoit  (Worcester, Mass.) landed a single in shallow centerfield to drive in Addison Tarr (Oxnard, Calif.). Daniel Quint (Wells, Maine) slapped a two-out single to left to plate Alec Willey (San Diego, Calif.).
 
The Fighting Scots tacked on a run in the fifth to widen the gap to 3-0 as Chris Leavitt (E. Bridgewater, Mass.) singled to knock in Dean Demers (Sandy Hook, Conn.) from second base.
 
Eastern Nazarene got on the board in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to 3-1. Joshua Bombard (Rutland, Mass.) motored home on a sacrifice fly to right off the bat of Pesce.
 
Fiorentino hurled his team-leading third complete game of the season and fanned six batsmen to finish with 115 career strikeouts. Morgan Hyde (Thomson, Ga.) was dominant for the Fighting Scots going the complete game with three strikeouts and allowing only four hits. He improved to 3-4 on the year.
 
In the final game of the day, Gordon pounded their way to 12 runs in the middle innings to cruise to an easy win.
 
Gordon manufactured seven runs in the top of the fourth to seize a 7-0 advantage. Hyde collected two RBIs in the inning while Benoit, Quint, Christian Hodge, and Leavitt all added RBIs.
 
The Fighting Scots notched five runs in the fifth to stretch the margin to 12-0. Benoit scored as Quint reached on an error. Demers sent a single back up the middle to plate Willey and Quint. Demers scurried home on an infield single by Leavitt. Tarr followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in Hodge.
 
The Lions got on the board in the home half of the seventh. After Kefalis roped a pinch-hit single, Greenlee laced a double to the gap in right-center to drive in Kefalis all the way from first base.
 
Junior Alex Way (Syracuse, N.Y.) pitched 3.2 innings in his seventh start of the year and recorded two strikeouts. Devin Haberstumpf (Forest Hills, N.Y.) tossed one-third of an inning in his sixth relief appearance of the season. Ryan Spina (Selden, N.Y.) worked three innings of in his seventh appearance out of the bullpen and struck out two batters.
 
Gordon racked up 14 hits to go with their 12 runs, including a 4-for-4 game for the surging Leavitt.
 
Garrett Poole (Rindge, N.H.) has come into his own as a starter over the last few weeks, earning his second straight winning decision. He also only allowed four hits and one run, while walking none. He set down five Lions in seven innings.
 
The Fighting Scots return to non-conference action on Monday against Salem State with their CCC position more clear.
