Scots Fight Off Golden Bears; Advance to CCC Semis

Match Results
WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Men's Tennis shook off a slow start to beat sixth-seeded Western New England in the first round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference playoffs. The match was even after two doubles matches, but Gordon won the final four decisions of the day to take a 5-1 match and advance to No. 2 Nichols on Wednesday.

Gordon improves to 16-5 on the season, while Western New England ends its 2017 campaign at an even 9-9.

All-CCC members Jonathan Frink (La Crescenta, Calif.) and Peter Godwin (Manchester, Conn.) gave Gordon the early advantage with an 8-2 win at third doubles. Unlike the match a week ago, Western New England flipped a score by taking the second doubles spot 8-4 after a sound defeat in the regular season meeting. Luke Surawski  (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Daniel O'Neill (Branford, Conn.) figured out Gordon's second duo to register the tying win.

Mason Casady (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Nate Lookwhy (Westborough, Mass.) also had a tough time before pulling out an 8-6 win. Gordon's top team blanked the Golden Bears in the first meeting.

The Fighting Scots took control of the match in singles play when Frink cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Surawski at third singles. High school teammate Eric Kim (La Crescenta, Calif.) eventually posted the match-clinching victory at five with a 6-2, 6-3 straight-set win.

Godwin had the win sandwiched in between, breezing past his opponent 6-2, 6-1 to vault Gordon to its third consecutive semifinal appearance.
