In Gordon Field Hockey's final home contest of the season, the visiting Nor'easters of the University of New England brought a storm of their own to the windy and rainy Brigham Athletic Complex, blowing past the Scots, 5-0, to improve to 11-8 overall and an impressive 10-1 in the CCC.
Gordon's
Jasmine Rosa held her own in goal for the Scots making 10 saves in 70 minutes of action.
The Nor'easters got things started in the seventh minute off a Kersey Boulay (Sr./Liberty, Maine) penalty stroke to put the visitors ahead, 1-0. Gordon's defense successfully defended three penalty corners in row, but UNE found the back of the net again on their fourth try off of a Boulay dish to Kendra MacDonald (Jr./Lebanon, N.H.). Almost a minute later and after a few saves by Rosa, Julia Steeves (Fr./Skowhegan, Maine) muscled another through for the Nor'easters to make it 3-0 midway through the first.
Gordon attempted to take advantage of a penalty corner of their own in the 23rd minute, but UNE's stingy keeper Liz Sargent (So./South Burlington, Vt.) was determined to maintain her shutout and deflected the ball away for one of her three saves on the afternoon. UNE responded immediately by going coast-to-coast for a quick goal from MacDonald assisted by Nichole Grady (Jr./Oxford, Mass.) at 25:16. Then, with just under two minutes left to play in the first, UNE padded its lead even further from a powerful Reanna Boulay (So./Liberty, Maine) strike off a penalty corner.
Following a quick halftime, UNE came out hot again to put up four shots in the first 10 minutes, but Gordon's defense did its job and disallowed any more tallies on the board. After a 30-minute lightning delay, all offense for both sides was stalled and the game eventually wrapped at 5-0.
The Scots finish up the regular season as they travel to Bristol, Rhode Island to take on Roger Williams at 4 p.m.
