Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Scots Blow Past Nor'easters In CCC Quarters, 2-0

The No. 3 seed Fighting Scots welcomed the No. 6 Nor'easters of the University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's soccer quarterfinal action tonight at the Brigham Athletic Complex, where the Scots clinched their spot in the CCC semifinals with a decisive 2-0 victory over their guests.

Gordon's Noah Craig and Tyler Modzeleski paced the Scots' attack with one goal each, while Brody Veleber and Wesley Sprague combined for three saves in the win.

The Scots got on the board in the 17th minute when Ryan Modzeleski used a free kick to find the head of Craig, who nodded it home for the 1-0 lead. Gordon's offense continued to put pressure on the Nor'easters with Tyler Modzeleski having a quality opportunity in the 27th minute, but UNE keeper Nathan Delesdernier (Sr./Niantic, Conn.) rejected the effort to keep his team within one. Six minutes later, however, Tyler Modzeleski was not to be denied again, as he tucked a pass from Josh Beveridge past a diving Delesdernier to give the Scots some extra cushion going into the break.

In the second frame, Delesdernier turned away everything that came his way, booking five of his six total saves on the night, while Sprague stepped in to register one save and preserve the shutout.

The Scots travel to Newport, Rhode Island to face No. 2 Salve Regina University in the CCC semifinals on Wednesday, October 31 at 4 p.m. In their previous meeting on October 20, the Scots and Seahawks played to a 1-1 draw.

Beyond the Box Score
  • Tyler Modzeleski's goal tonight marks his eighth of the season, a new career high.
  • The Scots have shutout each of their quarterfinal opponents three years in a row and have not lost a quarterfinal game since 2008.
  • As said by Head Coach Matt Horth, "Im thrilled with the win tonight and we are already looking forward to our semifinal match. The guys moved the ball really well and we could have easily had a few more goals to our tally."
