Gordon forward
Ian Burkhart netted the golden goal on a solo effort in the 97th minute to propel the Fighting Scots to a 3-2 Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over host Western New England today at Suprenant Field. The win comes after a seven-day layoff for the Scots and improves them to 7-4 overall (3-0 CCC), while the Golden Bears slide to 7-4-2 (0-2-2 CCC).
After a scoreless first half which saw a 6-4 shot advantage in favor of the Golden Bears, both teams hunkered down for what was shaping up to be a hotly contested second half. The fireworks started early when Dante Cancellaro (Jr./Watertown, Conn.) put WNE on the board for the 1-0 lead in the 51st minute following a throw in from Brendan Siegel (Sr./Liberty, N.Y.). Staying true to their moniker, the Fighting Scots battled back with a pair of unanswered goals from
Jarvin Ramirez and
Josh Beveridge in the 66th and 73rd minutes, respectively, but WNE's Corey Brown got the equalizer just five minutes later to force extra time.
With
Wesley Sprague turning away a pair of shots at the outset of overtime to stall the Golden Bears' offense, the stage was set for Burkhart's heroics as he collected a ball just inside the area and chipped over scrambling WNE keeper Sam Brewer (Sr./Westford, Mass.) to the far post to preserve the Scots' CCC unbeaten streak.
Sprague finished the day with seven saves to earn the W, while Brewer also recorded seven stops in the loss.
Gordon welcomes Endicott for a CCC showdown on Tuesday, October 9 at the Brigham Athletic Complex. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

- Western New England has played in four overtime games this season (all CCC contests) and has yet to notch a win (0-2-2).
- Said Coach Matt Horth of the game: "Our guys showed fantastic character throughout. After their first goal, we saw a bit more space going forward and were able to really assert ourselves until the end.
