Gordon College Men's Basketball was on the road in Boston for its first Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup of the season at host Wentworth Institute of Technology tonight and held the Leopards to their lowest scoring total of the season en route to a 66-47 victory.
Eric Demers led all scorers with 20 points,
Noah Szilagyi tacked on 13 of his own, and
Parker Omslaer registered 10 points and four boards in the Fighting Scots' conference-opening win.
The Leopards leading contributors were Kyle Henseler (So./Coventry, R.I.) and Stephen Azums (Jr./Hyde Park, Mass.), who recorded eight points apiece. Azums also grabbed 12 boards in the loss.
Both teams return to CCC action at 3 p.m. this coming Saturday as the Scots host Curry College and Wentworth welcomes Western New England University.
How It Happened:
- Szilagyi made it a seven-point game after converting a fast break layup to put the Scots up 14-7 eight minutes into the first half.
- Not even a minute later, Wentworth hit back-to-back three pointers to bring the game back to within one. However, a three from Jake Haar and a pair of jumpers from Demers gave the Scots a comfortable nine-point lead with just under seven minutes remaining.
- Henseler answered back with a three of his own, but Haar and Szilagyi hit back-to-back from behind the arc to send the Scots into the locker room with a 32-20 lead.
- Already carrying a healthy lead, Omslaer blocked an Azums layup midway through the second which Demers converted for three at the other end to give the Scots their largest lead of the night to that point, 48-30.
- Facing a large deficit, Wentworth struggled to jumpstart its offense in the run of play, managing just 13 points down the stretch, eight of which were scored from the stripe.
Beyond The Box Score:
- Tonight Gordon held its opponent to under 50 points for the first time since 2015 when they beat Curry 58-49.
- The Fighting Scots' win is their fourth in a row against Wentworth, improving to 13-10 all-time against the black and gold.
- Said Head Coach Tod Murphy: "Tonight's game was a typical Gordon/Wentworth game. It was a physical defensive minded game. I thought our guys physically played a solid game, but we made way too many mental errors. The bottom line is we got a road conference win, and that will ALWAYS be a good thing."
