Gordon College Men's Basketball welcomed NESCAC opponent Colby College in non-league play this evening, taking control of the matchup for an 85-79 victory. The win for the Fighting Scots is their sixth in a row, while the Mules snap their three-game win streak.
For the visitors, Sam Jefferson (Jr./Newton, Mass.) led all scorers with 22 points, Noah Tyson (Fr./Rutland, Vt.) dropped 18 with 12 boards, and Matt Hanna (So./Milford, Mass.) notched 14 points and eight rebounds.
It was the most balanced effort all season for the Scots as
Garrisson Duvivier netted 18 points and 14 rebounds,
Noah Szilagyi 15 points,
Jake Haar 13 points and six assists, and
Parker Omslaer and
Eric Demers with 12 points apiece.
The Scots look to keep the magic going as they host Johnson & Wales on Saturday, December 8 at 3 p.m. The Scots traveled to the Wildcats last year and came out with an 88-80 victory.
How It Happened:
- There were six lead changes in the first 10 minutes of the half before Colby added some cushion room after a Wallace Tucker (So./Atlanta, Ga.) three-pointer put the Mules up 25-18.
- With a little under two minutes remaining in the first, Demers hit a layup to give Gordon a 37-35 lead. An Omslaer dunk 20-seconds later forced the Mules to call a quick timeout in an effort to halt the Scots' momentum, and a three from Tyson brought the visitors back to within one (39-38) going into the half.
- Trading shots for the majority of the second frame, both teams were knotted at 50 with 12 minutes remaining in regulation. There were seven lead changes in the next five minutes before the Scots began to pull away, as Duvivier hit a few clutch jumpers to help the Scots lead by as many as nine.
- A Jefferson three-pointer put the Mules within six, but Demers answered back with a three of his own to keep the lead at nine. Another Omslaer dunk all but sealed the deal for the Scots, who took the eventual six-point victory.
Beyond The Box Score
- The Scots played a NESCAC school for the first time since 2012 when they hosted Tufts, losing 78-85.
- Eric Demers had a season-high five steals and two blocks, teammate Jake Haar also recorded a season-high with six assists, while freshman David Massillon notched a career-high nine points.
- Said Head Coach Tod Murphy: "We gave up 17 3-point shots and turned the ball over 17 times, and still managed to beat a good team. It wasn't a well-played game for us, but whenever you can beat a 7-1 team from a conference as powerful as the NESCAC, that's a good thing. Although we didn't have a great offensive game, we made big shots at big times, and that's what good teams do."
