SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. — Gordon opened its season against Mount Holyoke at MHC Turf Field and put 11 shots on goal in its 16-8 loss.
The Fighting Scots (0-1) got on the board first in the first minute of the game as
Katelyn Dyer scored her first career goal off a pass from Great Moore. The Lyons (1-0) tied the game a minute later with a goal by Deyscha Smith. They scored three straight goals in the next five minutes to make it a 4-1 game.
Sabrina Jandreau scored her first career goal off a free position shot to make it 4-2. Kaitlin Braz made it a 5-2 game with a free position goal. Dyer scored again to make it 5-3 before Mount Holyoke scored three straight goals to stretch the lead to five goals. Moore scored her first two career goals in the next four minutes to make it 8-5. The Lyons responded by scoring four straight goals to stretch the lead out to seven goals. Jandreau and
Olivia McCarrick scored in the last three minutes to make it a 12-7 game at halftime.
In the second half, the Lyons scored two goals in the first seven minutes to make it a 14-7 game. McCarrick scored her second goal of the game in the 41
st minute to cut the deficit down to six goals. Mount Holyoke tightened up on defense the last 19 minutes of action as they only allowed two shots the rest of the way and added two more goals to seal the win.
Moore, Dyer, Jandreau, and McCarrick all scored two goals apiece. McCarrick led the team with five ground balls while Dyer grabbed four ground balls.
Rebecca Resnick and
Kaitlyn Ober both recorded four saves in the net for Gordon.
The Fighting Scots will next host Worcester State in their home opener March 1 at 4 p.m.
