AUBURNDALE, Fla. — Gordon played Keene State in a doubleheader at the RussMatt Invitational and had a combined 28 hits in its 13-3 and 12-2 wins at Lake Myrtle Park.
In the first game, the Owls (4-4) struck first in the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run by Nate Rossi. The Fighting Scots (3-6) scored three runs in the top of the third with RBI singles by
Erik Gauer and
Travis Benoit and
John Lagerfeldt was walked with the bases loaded to make it a 4-1 game. Gordon added four runs in the top of the fifth with RBI singles by Benoit and
Chris Leavitt along with a walk by
Addison Tarr and
Joseph Mack being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. They scored four more runs in the top of the sixth to stretch the lead to 11 runs. John Tarascio hit a two-RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to nine runs. Lagerfeldt hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to drive in
Christian Hodge for Gordon's last run of the game.
Benoit batted 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs. Gauer went 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Lagerfeldt batted 2-for-3 with four RBIs, one run, one walk, and a double.
Derek Hudson picked up his first win of the season as he pitched a complete game and struck out five batters.
In the second game, the Fighting Scots scored six runs in the bottom of the first for a 6-0 lead. Four of those runs came with two outs in the inning. They added five more runs in the bottom of the third to stretch the lead out to 11 runs. Keene State got on the board in the top of the fourth with a sacrifice fly by David Sevigny that drove in Devin Springfield. Hodge hit an RBI single that scored Quint in the bottom of the fourth to make it 12-1. Tarascio hit an RBI single in the top of the fifth to make it 12-1. Gordon held the Owls to one hit the last two innings to seal the win.
Hodge batted 3-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs, and a triple. Mack went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, two runs, and a double. Quint batted 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
Garrett Poole started the game, pitched five innings, and recorded five strikeouts.
The Fighting Scots close out their spring break trip with a doubleheader against Crown tomorrow March 15 at 3:30 p.m. at Lake Myrtle Park.
